Isbister Building

Isbister Building

The Isbister Building is located behind Tier and parallels the length of it. It is straightforward contemporary statement finished in rough-hewn limestone in combination with exposed concrete and polished limestone dressing. The building was completed in 1961 for Commerce and Pschology, and now houses the departments of Sociology and Geography.

The building is named in honour of Alexander Kennedy Isbister, an English Metis, who was born at Cumberland House in 1822 and educated in Red River. Although he spent his later years in Scotland and England he showed his concern for education in Manitoba by bequeathing a large portion of his estate to the University of Manitoba. Scholarships provided by the Isbister Trust Fund have played an important part in student aid at the University.
