A new Arctic research facility is being constructed at the University of Manitoba in recognition of the university’s world renowned and expanding Arctic research program. The Nellie Cournoyea Arctic Research Facility – named after the first female premier of a Canadian territory – is an $8 million capital project that will add a fifth floor to the Clayton H. Riddell Faculty of Environment, Earth, and Resources. The additional 60,000 square foot space will house new specialized laboratories and classrooms needed to accommodate the influx of graduate students and researchers that will come to the U of M as a result of a new $10-million Canada Excellence Research Chair (CERC) in Arctic Geomicrobiology and Climate Change that was announced in May 2010.
