The structure of the Environmental Health and Safety Office (EHSO) is designed to enable response and service to a wide variety of disciplines and programs. Each staff member is responsible for and has specific expertise in one or more of the key programs.

Employees and Responsibilities (in alphabetical order)

Joey Bellino - Joey has a B.Sc., with a major in Environmental Science. Joey previously spent 3 years with Miller Environmental Corporation, where he gained knowledge in the areas of safely packaging and transferring hazardous waste. Other responsibilities included hazardous materials emergency response and management of household hazardous waste events. Joey is NFPA certified to the HazMat operations level. Joey's responsibilities include the collection, storage and disposal of hazardous waste as well as hazardous materials response. Other duties include elements of the asbestos management program(AMP).

Kevin Chapdelaine – Kevin Joined EHSO February 2012 and brings 27 years of fire service experience gained within the Canadian Forces.  He has a Bachelor of Fire and Safety Degree (BFSS) and a Fire Service Leadership Diploma both earned through the Justice Institute of B.C.  In addition, Kevin’s qualifications with (IFSAC) accreditation include Level 4 Fire Officer, Incident Safety Officer, Level 2 Fire Inspector, Level 3 Fire Investigator, Hazardous Materials Technician, Level 2 Fire Service Instructor, Fire and Life Safety Educator.  Kevin has served throughout most of Canada and has deployed too many parts of the world.  His Incident Command experiences are numerous, and he has been a participant and a team leader in major operations such as the 1997 Manitoba Floods, response to the events of 9/11 at the Winnipeg Airport, and the 2002 G8 Conference held at Kananaskis. He also has extensive training in chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear events and has been a member of a Haz-Mat/CBRN response Team.

Steven Cole - Steven joined EHSO November, 2005 in a newly created position dealing with animal care occupational health issues. Steve has a B.Sc and M.Sc. with a major in Animal Science and two years animal research experience in various University of Manitoba animal care facilities.  Steve’s Masters thesis was on the application of genetic and immunological diagnostic systems for the detection of pathogens in livestock.  Following that he gained four years experience in a biopharmaceutical research laboratory developing and manufacturing vaccines for production of therapeutic antibodies for the treatment of gastrointestinal pathogens.

Evelyn Froese - Evelyn joined the EHSO in the fall of 1999 to provide much needed support in the Chemical and Biological Safety Program. Evelyn has a B.Sc. and obtained her Certificate in Interdisciplinary Studies (CIS) from the Continuing Education program at the U of M as well as attending courses on the Certification of Biological Safety Cabinets at Nuaire Inc. and a course in the Control of Biohazards in the Research Laboratory at John Hopkins University. She has more than 15 years laboratory experience at the Manitoba Institute of Cell Biology (MICB) and Cadham Provincial Laboratory. Evelyn now works exclusively in the Biosarfety Program with Judy Shields and Steve Cole.

Paul Houle - Paul is a Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) and a Professional Manager (P.Mgr.). He graduated from the Certified in Management program offered by the Extended Education faculty. Paul has completed several courses offered by the Manitoba Emergency Services College and the Canadian Emergency Management College. He is certified as a Hazardous Materials Technician (NFPA472), Level II Emergency Services Instructor (NFPA1041), Level 1 Firefighter (NFPA1001) and has completed advanced live agent CBRNE training at Defense Research and Development Canada. Paul holds licenses for explosives, pyrotechnics and fireworks.
Paul joined the EHSO in 1998 with a background in hazardous waste management, firefighting and emergency response. His areas of responsibility include hazardous waste management, asbestos management, confined space entry, transportation of dangerous goods, mould management and hazardous materials emergency response.

Terry Neufeld - Terry joined EHSO in January 2004. She is a University of Manitoba graduate with a B.H.Ec.Terry's responsibilities include controlled products data base; ordering of supplies; library and video records; coordination of EHSO activities and meetings. This position also assists the Administrative Assistant in day-to-day office administration.

Pearl Novotny - Pearl acquired secretarial experience in several departments at the University of Manitoba prior to assuming the duties of Administrative Assistant for the EHSO office. Pearl's responsibilities include reception, finance and budgets, purchasing, library management, cataloguing resource material, purchasing, correspondence and safety committee support.

Leona Page - Leona has a B.Sc. and has completed the Occupational Health and Safety Certificate and the Certificate in Adult Continuing Education, as offered by Extended Education, University of Manitoba. Leona has also achieved core level certification as a Radiation Safety Professional, CRPA (R). Leona worked in medical research for five years where she gained experience in chemical, radiation and general laboratory concepts prior to joining the EHSO in 1990. Leona's responsibilities include radiation safety for radioactive materials, and more recently she has taken on the development of X-ray equipment and Lasers. Leona's office is located at the Bannatyne Campus Location.

Alison Reineke - Alison has a B.Sc. and is a Canadian Registered Safety Professional. She has experience conducting inspections and investigations in various industries in order to recognize, evaluate and control exposure to harmful physical and chemical agents. Alison's responsibilities include occupational hygiene, mould, indoor air quality, noise exposure, chemical safety and WHMIS.

Judy Shields - Judy has worked in the occupational health field since 1995. Judy graduated from the University of Manitoba with a BA, received her RN diploma from the Winnipeg General Hospital Program and COHN from Grant MacEwan Community College in Edmonton. Judy has had a variety of occupational health work experiences, mainly in industry, working with New Flyer Industries, Maple Leaf Meats, CN and the WRHA. Judy is located at the Fort Garry Campus location.

John Van Delden – John has had over 25 years of experience in the field of health and safety prior to joining the University  as the Director of EHSO  in January, 2010. John has a Master of Engineering degree from the University of Toronto and a B.Sc. from the University of Guelph.  He is certified for the comprehensive practice of occupational hygiene (recognizing, evaluating and controlling hazards related to exposure to chemical and physical agents in the workplace) in Canada and the United States. He is also a Canadian Registered Safety Professional. John’s primary role at the University is to look at systems to manage safety and health issues at the organizational level.

Alison Yarmill - Alison has a BSc. 4-Yr degree with a major in biology from the University of Winnipeg. She has over 20 years experience working in various labs. The majority has been at the University of Manitoba, Bannatyne Campus, where she did breast cancer research in a molecular biology lab and also a clinical assay for breast cancer patients. In the newly created position of Laboratory Safety, she will be responsible for the fume hood inspection and the lab signage programs. She will also be supporting the Radiation and Biological/Chemical Safety programs. Her office is located at the Bannatyne Campus.
