The University’s Organizational Safety and Health Advisory Committee (OSHA) and Local Area Health and Safety (LASH) Committees play a significant and vital role in the University’s safety and health program. The University Safety Committee system was established in order to assist the Employer and Workers to cooperatively identify, assess and resolve safety & health concerns inside the University’s many workplaces.

The Organizational Safety & Health Advisory Committee (OSHA)
The Organizational Safety and Health Committee (OSHA) is the recognized Committee required under provincial legislation and meets on a regular basis. It has representatives from all bargaining units, plus the student union (UMSU), excluded staff and key administrative departments. The terms of reference for the OSHA Committee are posted on the EHSO website and minutes of meetings are also circulated and posted after the meetings take place. Copies are forwarded to WSH Division. OSHAC members are advised of the educational leave provisions and are able to attend training and information sessions.

Local Area Safety and Health (LASH) Committees The Local Area Safety and Health (LASH) Committees play an important role, along with the Employer, in identifying, assessing and resolving many safety concerns at the Departmental, Building and Area level. The Biological Safety Advisory and the Radiation Protection Committees: These are discipline specific committees dealing with issue directly related to Biological and Radiation Safety respectively and make recommendations to University administration for improvements and changes in programs.

The Biological Safety Advisory Committee The University has established this committee in order to identify the University's commitment to and responsibility for the safe use of biological materials, agents and other sources of biological hazards in undergraduate and research laboratories in order to protect the environment, students, academic and support staff, and visitors to the campus from the adverse effects of biological hazards.

The Radiation Protection Committee The University has established and shall maintain a Radiation Protection Committee comprising members of the University community and stakeholders knowledgeable in the safe use of radioactive material, X-ray equipment and other sources of ionizing radiation. The Radiation Protection Committee is responsible for administering the regulations on the possession and use of radioactive materials covered by the CNSC Consolidated Radioisotope License. One of the responsibilities of the Committee is to issue Internal Radioisotope Permits for the use of radioisotopes within the University and to ensure compliance with the terms of the Federal statutes for procurement of radioactive materials. In addition, the committee has the responsibility to assist and inform users of radioactive materials of the procedures and practices for the safe handling and disposal of these materials.
