Outstanding Workplace Initiative Strategy

Both leadership and management are important, and they are often intertwined. Effective leadership builds a powerful shared vision that inspires, clarifies and focuses the work of individuals and teams. Effective leaders also build trust, both within the organization and in individual relationships. At U of M, we encourage all academic and support staff to act as leaders, and we are committed to supporting their leadership growth and development.

Effective management focuses on goal attainment through ethical and efficient stewardship
of our organizational resources. People consistently identify the relationship with their manager as central to the engagement and effectiveness of their work. At U of M, we are committed to providing managers with the resources and skills necessary to accomplish their goals.

We will more clearly define and communicate what we expect in and from our leaders
and managers in both academic and administrative roles. We will provide enhanced, integrated, tailored programs and supports to meet those expectations, building on the many positive examples and programs already in place.

Actions will include learning programs, mentoring programs, coaching, networks and enhanced HR processes and tools.
