The It’s About Us! Employee Experience Survey was distributed to University of Manitoba employees in June 2011. It was the first confidential employee experience survey conducted at the university, and was developed as part of the outstanding workplace initiative (OWI) with Probe Research Inc.
One of the U of M’s strategic planning priorities is to be an outstanding workplace. Central to this goal is developing an understanding and appreciation of the academic and support staff experience at the university. Response to the survey was above average for post-secondary institutions, particularly for a first survey, with a response rate of 30.5 per cent.
On November 28, 2011, at the President’s Town Hall, U of M President David Barnard gave an overview of the survey’s findings and outlined how the university is moving forward to address those results.

This is especially significant since Mercer's 2010 proprietary What's Working™ survey reported that the overall job satisfaction for Canadians is sixty-nine percent and an average of sixty-five percent get a feeling of personal accomplishment from work
Other workplace strengths identified in the survey include a sense of contribution, our benefits and pensions, our friendly and supportive colleagues, our flexible work arrangements, and trust with and support from supervisors. The survey results also point to critical workplace challenges facing our community.
We have some work to do around the transparency of our decision making processes - how we ensure that all constituencies are able to see their role in decision-making, and how we communicate about the goals and practices of the University. We also need to increase our cooperation among departments, enhance leadership, professional, and career development, and ensure that all our employees feel respected and equitably treated.
