President's Message

An outstanding workplace for me is a place where people are treated with respect and affirmed, where people have fun, where the problems that arise are tackled seriously and where results are obtained. In an outstanding workplace there is a recognition of the latent capacities of each person, and where each has the opportunity to develop those capacities. This makes a workplace stimulating and enjoyable, it becomes a place where people want to be and where they want to make large contributions.

In academic work “both the cause and the company are great.” We are working together here at the University of Manitoba to build bigger futures for our students, their families and the communities in which they live and work; that is our “cause”, and for me it is an exciting one. I am excited to come to work every day and want others to feel the same way. And the “company” is great because our students and our colleagues – both faculty and support staff – are, in general wonderful people. When you have important work to do, and wonderful people with whom to do it, you can have an outstanding workplace.

When we value each other and value our work, we will create a place where we can all take a great deal of satisfaction in making outstanding contributions, a place in which others will want to join us.
