CHARACTER OF THE JOB

Under the general supervision of the Assistant Director, Housing and Student Life, the Senior Residence Security Guard is responsible for the safety and security of the people and facilities in the University's Residences (Arthur V. Mauro Residence, Mary Speechly Hall, Tache Hall, and University College). (S)he has supervisory responsibilities with regard to the Student Night Clerks

The Senior Residence Security Guard reports to the Assistant Director and works closely with the Student Life team to ensure community standards and University policies are adhered to within the residences.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Under general supervision, is responsible for the safety and security of the people and facilities in the University's Residences (Arthur V. Mauro Residence, Mary Speechly Hall, Tache Hall, and University College).
  • Monitors the residence buildings' security alarm systems.
  • As Supervisor, works to establish and cultivate a positive presence within the University community and liaise with individuals, committees, groups and other off-campus associated agencies on crime prevention and security related issues.
  • Sets up security schedules for the Student Night Clerks.
  • Supervises the night clerks during duty rounds of each residence.
  • During the summer months (May to August), performs rounds of each residence during shifts.
  • Functions as Team Supervisor, providing direction, instruction and advice to the team on procedures, policies and regulations; ensures staffing levels are maintained by scheduling of vacation and other leave requests; provides support and direction for new staff during probationary field training. Monitors performance of each team member, recommends training and development as required and under the direction of the Assistant Director completes a yearly evaluation of each Student Night Clerk.
  • Required to assist the Assistant Director, Housing and Student Life in the hiring and training of new Student Night Clerks, and has responsibility towards discipline, etc. of the Student Night Clerks.
  • Provides oral and/or written reports to appropriate official(s) of any unusual situation or emergency.
  • Communicates with the Student Life Team to ensure that any potential problem areas are checked frequently during and after any residence social functions, or on return from outside social functions.
  • Provides leadership for the team in developing and maintaining co-operative working relationships, exercising impartiality with all clients including faculty, students, staff and the general public.
  • Notifies Physical Plant/Assistant Manager of Caretakers of emergencies related to the buildings.
  • Liaises with Security Services
  • Assigns rooms, receives payment, and issues receipts to temporary guests, when needed.
  • Assists conference guests by providing information and assistance, as required.
  • Makes designated checks of all residences - deals with intruders and disturbances with each complex.
  • Locks residence doors at prescribed times, or opens same for students or other users as required in the assigned residence.
  • When not on scheduled rounds, must be available in the assigned office to assist students and users with keys, equipment, or prepared information.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or required.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

The minimum qualifications necessary for acceptable (satisfactory) job performance are:

Level of Formal Education

  • High School Diploma. Some post secondary education preferred

Experience

Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; excellent interpersonal skills; philosophy consistent with a team environment; must be computer literateAble to learn new concepts
  • Valid and current CPR and First Aid Certificates required.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to deal with large numbers of students, diffusing potential problems appropriately, essential.
  • Ability to organize, schedule, and assess work of others; ability to motivate others and to relate well to students, parents, conference guests, and staff.
  • Ability to be physically active - position involves a considerable amount of walking.
  • Strong commitment to a team building approach to all issues within Housing and Student Life and all campus stakeholders.
  • Proven leadership skills and ability to deal with crisis situations.
  • Ability to maintain composure in stressful situations while assessing status of an incident and implementing corrective measures.
  • Ability to work harmoniously within a team environment.
  • Ability to problem solve and think critically.
  • High level of tact and diplomacy in dealing with the culturally diverse University community, under a wide variety of circumstances.
  • Ability to independently demonstrate good judgment, initiative and professional discretion with matters pertaining to law and policy enforcement.
  • Highly motivated, self-starter, willing to build professional skills through training and experience.

Physical Requirements

  • Will be required to work rotating shifts (nights, evenings, and weekends)
  • Physically capable of performing the duties, i.e. ability to bend, stoop, stretch, climb several flights of stairs and carry out patrols on foot.

Physical Plant will instruct all employees to complete an Orientation Workshop, normally during the first day on the job, and the Health and Safety Orientation Module, normally during the probation period.  Employees will also be instructed to complete various workshops, such as Asbestos Awareness, etc. during the first year of employment depending upon an individual's classification."
