CHARACTER OF THE JOB

The Physical Plant Department is responsible for the entire physical plant of the University including construction, renovations, provision of utility services, and the care and maintenance of all properties.

Under general supervision of the Senior Industrial Mechanic, the Industrial Mechanic is responsible for diagnosing, repairing, replacing, rebuilding, modifying, machining and/or fabricating parts for mechanical equipment. The Industrial Mechanic's work also involves coordination (as applicable) with other trades to minimize interruption in equipment use.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Repairs, modifies and overhauls all mechanical equipment including: heating, centrifugal, gear driven, turbine, split horizontal, vertical and multi-stage equipment.
  • Corrects malfunctions in hydraulic, vacuum and compressed air systems and adjusts general controls and regulators.
  • Overhauls light, medium and heavy duty fan units, by making effective use of lifting gear, chain blocks, slings, scaffolding, etc.
  • Responsible for maintenance of Food Service equipment including: conveyors, industrial dishwashers, steamers, ovens, mixers and other equipment.
  • Responsible for maintaining a wide variety of specialized equipment such as: incubators, sewage and water process, mixers, ancillary equipment, control valves, etc.
  • Advises when immediate shut down of equipment is necessary to minimize damage or when temporary continued operation will have no harmful effect.
  • Machines, brazes, welds and solders parts as required.
  • Erects, lines up and levels machinery and equipment.
  • Estimates time and material for specific jobs.
  • Maintains records as required.
  • Installs and commissions new equipment.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

The minimum qualifications necessary for acceptable (satisfactory) job performance are:

Level of Formal Education

  • Must possess either a valid Certificate of Qualification as an Industrial Mechanic, or a valid Certificate of Qualification as a Machinist, or other appropriate certification issued by the Manitoba Department of Labour.
  • Must be qualified to operate lathes, milling machine, drill presses, brakes, surface grinders and all portable and stationary Machine Shop equipment.
  • Must have at least a Class 5 Driver's License valid in Manitoba.

      Industrial Mechanic Class A

  • Must possess a valid Certificate of Qualification as Industrial Mechanic plus a valid Certificate of Qualification as a Machinist; or, other appropriate certification issued by the Manitoba Department of Labour plus one year of directly related experience at the University of
  • Manitoba (a new employee who is hired and who has Class A certification qualifications will be classified as Class B until he/she completes one year of experience at the University).
  • Must have Class 5 Driver's Licence valid in Manitoba.

      Industrial Mechanic Class B:

  • Must possess either a valid Certificate of Qualification as Industrial Mechanic plus a valid Certificate of Qualification as a Machinist, or other appropriate certification issued by the Manitoba Department of Labour.
  • Must have Class 5 Driver's License valid in Manitoba.

Skills and Abilities

  • Must be able to estimate costs of time and materials required for new installations or repairs to existing systems or equipment.
  • Must be able to read blue prints, understand technical language and manuals.
  • Must have the knowledge and ability to repair various types of equipment safely and properly.Must possess effective communication skills, both oral and written.
    Must demonstrate initiative and the ability to work independently.

Physical Requirements

  • Capable of performing the duties as assigned.
  • Must be alert and thorough.

Physical Plant will instruct all employees to complete an Orientation Workshop, normally during the first day on the job, and the Health and Safety Orientation Module, normally during the probation period.  Employees will also be instructed to complete various workshops, such as Asbestos Awareness, etc. during the first year of employment depending upon an individual's classification."
