CHARACTER OF THE JOB

The Physical Plant Department is responsible for the entire physical plant of the University including construction, renovations, provision of utility services, and the care and maintenance of all properties.

Under the general supervision of the Zone Manager (or designate), the Special Functions Caretaker is responsible for setting up, taking down and cleaning up facilities after special functions, maintaining surrounds of buildings, special cleaning and maintaining master clock systems.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Sets up tables, chairs, dividers, platforms, etc. for banquets, celebrations, movies, examinations, convocation, registration, socials, receptions and other special functions.
  • Alters original set ups as required.
  • Maintains liaison with special function organizers.
  • When not working in the Manitoba Room, maintains good standard of cleanliness in the student areas, meeting rooms, lounges, halls, stairs and entrances of buildings.
  • Provides general cleaning, refinish floors, shampoo carpets.
  • Locks and unlocks entrance doors as required.
  • Replaces burned out light bulbs/lamping.
  • Clears snow and ice at building entrances, on sidewalks, stairway platforms, etc.
  • Maintains grounds around buildings.
  • Maintains master clock systems and stock of same on both University campuses.
  • Maintains clock systems inventory on computer.
  • Maintains equipment in good condition.
  • Reports any malfunctions of all equipment.
  • Performs other related duties as required or assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

  • The minimum qualifications necessary for acceptable (satisfactory) job performance are:

Level of Formal Education

  • Education to an acceptable level.

Experience

  • Acceptable related experience as a utility caretaker.

Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to follow oral, written and diagrammed instruction in English.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Good English communication skills.
  • Ability to deal effectively with staff members, students, customers and organizers of functions.
  • Customer service skills.
  • Ability to perform minor repairs.
  • Available to work shifts.
  • Satisfactory work record of attendance and punctuality.

Physical Requirements

  • Heavy lifting (80 lbs.) is a normal requirement.
  • Capable of performing the duties as assigned.

Physical Plant will instruct all employees to complete an Orientation Workshop, normally during the first day on the job, and the Health and Safety Orientation Module, normally during the probation period.  Employees will also be instructed to complete various workshops, such as Asbestos Awareness, etc. during the first year of employment depending upon an individual's classification."
