At the University of Manitoba, we are committed to following best governance practices and we make our decisions based on the principles of integrity, accountability, prudent fiscal management, transparency and inclusion.
We believe it is critical to provide all members of our community of learning, discovery and engagement timely access to important information about programs and policy, while providing opportunities for meaningful inclusion in the decision making process.
We seek to actively engage our students, faculty, teaching staff, support staff, alumni, donors and government partners.

In addition, the University of Manitoba has launched the Visionary (re)Generation Open International Design Competition, opening the door to the creation of a new Fort Garry campus plan. Through the university’s Campus Planning Office, audits are also being conducted on both the Fort Garry and Bannatyne campuses to ensure we make the best use of existing space.
Change is imperative for our university as we strive to keep in step with the evolving needs of our students, faculty and staff. Working together to embed a culture of change at the university allows us to continually assess how we are doing things and reflect on how we can do them better.
Some of the ways the university is driving and support change are:
Through the Resource Optimization and Service Enhancement (ROSE) Program. Initiated in 2009, ROSE prompted us to take a decisive look at our operations and processes, identifying areas where we could be more efficient, cost-effective and service-oriented. Its 31 initiatives are focused in nine areas: finance, human resources, legal, research services, physical plant, IT, external relations, students and graduate students.
The Academic Structure Initiative was launched to explore, simplify and improve the current academic structure with the specific goal of identifying options for reducing the number of faculties and schools from the current total of 20 to a number closer to the national average of 13 by 2017.
The university’s Learning and Development Services provides organizational development and change support to departments across the university. Its learning and change consultants are supporting many programs, including ROSE and the Academic Structure Initiative.
Being an outstanding workplace is one of the four priorities outlined in the University of Manitoba’s Strategic Planning Framework. The Outstanding Workplace Initiative was established to recognize and celebrate the university’s strengths and achievements while also identifying areas in need of improvement. The OWI team released an Outstanding Workplace Initiative strategy and plan in late 2012, and supports a number of related advisory groups, as well as the UMLeaders Program.
