  • Dr. Greg Smith

    An accomplished administrator, professor and scholar, Dr. Greg Smith has been appointed Vice-Provost (Academic Planning and Programs) effective April 1, 2022. A professor in the Faculty of Arts’ Department of History, Dr. Smith previously served as the Associate Dean (Graduate Studies, Curriculum, Space, Internationalization).

Dr. Smith brings a breadth of administrative experience to the Provost’s Office. During his time serving as Associate Dean (Graduate Studies, Curriculum, Space, Internationalization), Dr. Smith also fulfilled the duties of the academic administrative role of Acting Department Head of Economics. A key member of the University’s COVID-19 Recovery Steering Committee since its inception and chair of the Senate Committee on Curriculum and Course Changes, Dr. Smith continues to advance the goals and priorities of both the Faculty and the University as a whole. 

Throughout his career he has demonstrated his commitment to collaboration, equity and high-quality programs. A recipient of the Faculty of Arts’ Outstanding Achievement Award in 2010, Dr. Smith holds a doctorate and master's degree in history from the University of Toronto, and a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) from the University of British Columbia.

The following responsibilities are part of the portfolio of the Vice-Provost (Academic Planning and Programs).

Academic review and quality assurance

To ensure academic excellence and quality of academic programming, all academic programs at UM undergo a process of periodic formal reviews. These reviews are conducted through Senate-mandated academic program reviews and/or external accreditation reviews. Coordination and administrative support for academic program reviews are provided by the Office of the Vice-Provost (Academic Planning and Programs).

Academic program renewal

UM offers a broad range of academic and professional programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels, as well as programming opportunities in extended education and professional development. The Office of the Vice-Provost (Academic Planning and Programs) advises on processes with respect to the introduction of new programs and significant changes to existing academic programs and acts as liaison with the provincial government regarding program change and renewal.

Academic planning

The Office of the Vice-Provost (Academic Planning and Programs) provides leadership from an academic perspective for institutional and resource planning, including strategic planning, budget development and strategic enrolment management. The Office provides advice and support in managing approval processes related to academic partnerships with partner post-secondary institutions and external parties, and institutional approval of tuition and student fees.
