The Vice-Provost (Graduate Education) oversees graduate education and is responsible for leading the Faculty of Graduate Studies.  He works with the Vice-Provost (Students) to provide an exceptional educational experience for graduate students and co-chairs the University’s Strategic Enrolment Management Planning initiative with her.  In consultation with the Vice-Provost (Academic Planning and Programs) he oversees the review of the University’s graduate programs and guides the introduction of new graduate programs and modification of existing programs.  He is either a member or ex officio to approximately half of the 21 subcommittees of senate. 

Biography
Dr. Jay Doering obtained a B.Sc. (Civil Engineering) from Queen’s University in 1984 and a Ph.D. from Dalhousie University in 1988. He assumed his first academic appointment at McMaster University. In 1993 he joined the University of Manitoba, where he served terms as Associate Head and Head of Civil Engineering. Before being appointed Vice-Provost (Graduate Education), he was the Dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies, a position that he still holds, and has held since July 2005. He has previously held positions of president for both the Canadian Association for Graduate Studies (CAGS) and the Western Canadian Deans of Graduate Studies.

Dr. Doering is a licensed professional engineer (in Manitoba and Ontario) and a professor of Civil Engineering with expertise in water resources engineering. He is known internationally for his work in coastal processes, river ice engineering, and hydraulic models. Locally, he is known for his expertise in the infrastructure and history of flooding in the Red River Valley, for which he won an Outreach Award in 2011. He is a Fellow of Engineers Canada and the Society for Civil Engineering and has won awards for research and teaching in this discipline. He has served in executive board positions with the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering, the Canadian Water Resources Association, and the Canadian Coastal Science and Engineering Association. He has remained active in the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Manitoba (APEGM) where he has served as member of council and the awards committee. He is currently is a member of APEGM’s investigation committee.
