On January 12, 2007, Rod Bruinooge, MP for Winnipeg South, on behalf of Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister for Western Economic Diversification Canada (WD) announced that WD will be contributing $555,000 towards a $1.03 million project to develop the Chemistry Centre of Excellence at the University of Manitoba.  Click here for a copy of the WD press release.

"Modern, state-of-the-art laboratories are essential to provide the level of education and hands-on experience required to create a strong workforce,'' Dr. Michael Freund, Associate Professor of Chemistry at the University of Manitoba and Canada Research Chair in Conducting Polymers and Electronic Materials is quoted in the release as saying. "Once completed, this facility will be the most modern and advanced undergraduate laboratory of its kind in the region and will expose our students to leading-edge technology that will increase their competitiveness in the job market, as well as their ability to increase innovation within the province.”

One of the MLAs for the University of Manitoba, Marilyn Brick, MLA (St. Norbert), was also in attendance at the announcement, as were representatives from WD and industry.
