CIBC scholarships help students succeed in agribusiness

A reception was held at the Fort Garry Campus on Thursday, March 31, 2011, to recognize the achievements of Kelvin Friesen and Bonnie Schott, who were awarded 2010-2011 CIBC Agricultural Scholarships for Agribusiness undergraduates

Invited guests from the CIBC included Mr. Dave Geddes (Senior Director, Prairies) who unfortunately was unable to attend, Mr. Randy James and Mr. Quinn Friesen, both Agriculture Banking Specialists. Also present was Mr. Leo Zyerfeld (Regional Manager, Specialized Segments, based in Calgary) who was visiting Winnipeg at the time. Our own Faculty and Department representatives and graduate students were pleased to attend the event.

Since 2003 there have been 26 CIBC Agricultural Scholarships, valued at a total of almost $80,000, awarded to students of the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences in recognition of the recipients' academic excellence and community involvement, both on and off the campus. The scholarships come from a $250,000 endowment fund, which CIBC donated to the University in 2001 as part of the "Building on Strengths" Campaign.

CIBC Agricultural Scholarships are some of the most significant awards in the agriculture program. The scholarships attract top students, motivating them to achieve top marks and recognizing their exemplary work.
To be eligible for the scholarship, students must be enrolled in the Bachelor of Science in Agribusiness degree, have achieved high standing in courses related directly to Agribusiness, have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.5 and demonstrate community involvement, both on and off campus, and a strong interest in pursuing a career in agribusiness.
