Career Development Program for International Agribusiness Graduate Students (CDPI) is a student organization helps international student prepare for careers.

Benefits for the Employers 

  • to have exposure to high quality international graduate students and observe them in work situations.
  • to have international graduate students available for projects, short-term assignments, consultations, analysis, or data projects.
  • to gain an awareness of international graduate students and their potential contributions to employers, and potential for initial and permanent employment.

Goals of Program 

  • to have international graduate students gain initial employment experience, e.g. 10-20 hours per week, primarily in the second year of their graduate degree (or summer job), spend a day with employers (job shadowing), build work place skill which, in some cases, might lead to more permanent employment.
  • to regularly invite employers and speakers to give employment and career seminars, and advice to students.

Skills Development

The program seeks to improve potential employment skills through:

  • holding regular meetings, and identifying and improving English communication and/or writing skills, interviewing, resume writing, cover letters, presentations, understanding work place environment and culture
  • building professionalism, high standards of conduct, and enhance the image of the international graduate students and the Department of Agribusiness and Agricultural Economics at the University of Manitoba in the eyes of employers.
  • receiving feedback from employers regarding students, in terms of language skills and work-place skills.
  • pre-evaluating employment skills for the workplace and eligibility before students are hired by the employer, to ensure that students meet the standards required by employers.
  • providing students a forum to exchange information on employment and career development.

Other Activities & Operations

  • providing a buddy system, where international students are matched with domestic students to familiarize themselves more with Canada; to have a mentoring system where individuals from industry serve as advisors to students.
  • helping students make employment contacts, through attending meetings such as Canadian Agri-Marketing Association (CAMA), Manitoba Association for Business Economics (MABE), Manitoba Institute of Agrologists (MIA), and various industry and association/professional meetings, etc.
  • developing and updating a book of employer contacts, speakers, websites, and addresses which students pass on to the next student group each year.
  • providing a program that is run for and designed for international agribusiness graduate students in order to help overcome barriers they face. Domestic graduate students are always very welcome to attend meetings and activities.
