Is animal science for me?
If you are interested in animal health, livestock production, animal biology, nutrition, biotechnology, producer support, or sales and marketing in the animal industry, this program is a major you should investigate.  If you are interested in pre-veterinary studies, animal science can take you there!

What is the program like?
Animal science is a four-year undergraduate degree that allows you to specialize in animal agriculture, with enough flexibility to explore your own interests with free elective courses.  After completing University 1 - a general year most students enter into immediately after high school - students learn about pure and applied sciences in the areas of animal behaviour and welfare, nutrition, genetics, biochemistry, and physiology.  Students gain an understanding of the major livestock species, including dairy and beef cattle, sheep, poultry, and swine.  In the last couple years of the degree, the focus is on advanced animal production.  Through their choices of electives, students can explore international careers, specialize in certain species, or gain a general knowledge in other areas of agriculture, like food or soil sciences.

Besides academic pursuits, our students enjoy active social lives, as the faculty of agricultural and food science students are famous for their lively events and fundraisers.

What kinds of jobs are out there?
With a BSc (agriculture), most animal science graduates pursue careers in the animal feed industry, producer or government organizations, or work in integrated livestock operations.  Others find jobs with genetics and biotechnology companies, in research laboratories, or with animal pharmaceutical companies.  Those who are accepted into veterinary colleges work for government organizations, research facilities, or in private practices as large or small animal vets.

What else can I do with my degree?
Some students do not enter typical animal science careers.  Animal science is a program that can prepare students for jobs in other agricultural industries.   Some use the degree as a stepping stone to even more diverse job choices.  Our graduates have gone on to become medical doctors, veterinarians, medical artists, teachers, and communications specialists.

Other undergraduates choose to continue their studies in master’s or PhD programs.  They can continue their studies at the University of Manitoba or at universities throughout the country and internationally.
