ANIMAL SCIENCE DEPARTMENT
OVERVIEW
Our Vision:
To
be the preferred source for knowledge and innovation in
animal agriculture.
Education
A major focus of
the department is undergraduate and graduate teaching. Major
disciplines include animal behaviour and welfare, genetics,
nutrition, biochemistry, and physiology. The major domestic
species are covered: beef and dairy cattle, swine, sheep and
poultry, as well as non-traditional species of livestock. The
program blends basic and applied sciences in animal production
technology so our graduates are able to respond to the changes
in the animal industry.
 |
The
four-year undergraduate program progresses from the study of
pure and applied sciences at the first and second year levels,
to the in-depth study of the systems of advanced animal
production in the third and fourth years. Students can pursue
pre-veterinary studies within the department. Two years of
pre-vet courses allow students to apply to veterinary schools
throughout Canada (Manitoba residents attend the Western
College of Veterinary Medicine in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan).
Many students attain undergraduate degrees while pursuing
pre-veterinary studies, as two years of pre-vet plus two more
years of animal science equals a full undergraduate
degree.
The
graduate program leads to MSc and PhD degrees in the fields of
genetics, nutrition, physiology, gut microbiology, and
immunology related to livestock and poultry. Many of our
students are international students.
