E.W. STRINGAM AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN ANIMAL SCIENCE

This award was established in 1984 to mark the retirement of Dr. Elwood W. Stringam. The current value of this award is $400. The criteria are as follows:

  • A graduating student with:
    • High academic performance in a minimum of 27 credit hours in animal science.
    • Qualities of personal excellence, unselfish service, and potential for leadership in the field of animal science.

NORMAN E. STANGER PRIZE IN PRE-VETERINARY STUDIES

This prize was first awarded in 1994. The award was established to honour Dr. Norman E. Stanger upon his retirement from the department of animal science. The current value of the prize is $1000 and is awarded to a student who:

  • is accepted into first year veterinary medicine at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine (WCVM) at the University of Saskatchewan.
  • has achieved the highest standing in the pre-veterinary qualifying year (year 2, carrying at least 80 percent course load) of students going forward to the WCVM.
  • In the event of a tie, the cumulative G.P.A. will be considered as the tiebreaker. Should no second-year student qualify, third- and fourth-year students may be considered.

ANIMAL NUTRITION ASSOCIATION OF CANADA SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship was first awarded in spring 1980. It is currently valued at $500 and is given to a student who:

  • is majoring in animal science.
  • has achieved at a high level (at least B+ average) in the courses 035.251 Anatomy and Physiology I: Control Systems and in 035.252 Anatomy and Physiology II: Nutrient Utilization or their current equivalents.
  • is registered for fourth year.
  • Sessional G.P.A. (Minimum 24 credit hours) for third year is used as a tiebreaker.

MANITOBA HATCHERY ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship was reinstated in the 1980-1981 academic year. It is currently valued at $400 dollars and is given to a student who:

  • is majoring in animal science.
  • has completed third year with high standing in any three of the basic required courses (035.250 Animal Production, 035.251 Anatomy and Physiology I: Control Systems, 035.252 Anatomy and Physiology II: Nutrient Utilization and 035.350 Principles of Animal Genetics) or their current equivalents.
  • has a sessional G.P.A. of B (3.00) or better on a minimum of 24 credit hours.
  • registers in the next academic year and has completed or is registered for 035.353 Animal Reproduction and/or 035.455 Avian Production Systems or their current equivalents.
  • In case of a tie, the cumulative G.P.A. is used as a tiebreaker.
  • If no undergraduate student qualifies for the award, a graduate student in poultry science may be considered.
  • Preference is to be given to students from Manitoba. If no Manitoba student qualifies, a student from another province may be considered.

MANITOBA EGG PRODUCERS SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship was established in 1982. The current value of this award is $300 and it is offered to a student who:

  • completed third year with a high standing (sessional G.P.A. > 3.00).
  • proceeds in the ensuing academic year to fourth-year agriculture.
  • is an animal science major who has completed or is registered in 035.455 Avian Production Systems or its current equivalent.

CANADIAN SOCIETY OF ANIMAL SCIENCE BOOK PRIZE

Criteria:

  • third year student who has taken at least four animal science courses.
  • excellence in academic performance.
  • completed three of four of the following required courses:
    • 035.251 Anatomy and Physiology I: Control Systems
    • 035.252 Anatomy and Physiology II: Nutrient Utilization
    • 035.351 Feeds and Feeding
    • 035.350 Principles of Animal Genetics
  • based on 50% sessional G.P.A. and 50% cumulative G.P.A.
  • minimum of 24 credit hours in third year but less than 96 credit hours total.
  • student is expected to graduate in following year.

MANITOBA PORK COUNCIL PRIZE - AGRICULTURE

This prize was established in 1984. At this time it was called the Manitoba Hog Producers Marketing Prize. In 1999 the prize was changed to the Manitoba Pork Council Prize - Agriculture.The current value of the prize is $1000 and the criteria for this award are:

  • a student graduating with a bachelor of science (agriculture).
  • completed a minimum of 18 credit hours in each of the last two academic years preceding graduation.
  • achieved highest standing with a minimum G.P.A. in the following four courses:
    • 032.252 Anatomy and Physiology II: Nutrient Utilization
    • 035.350 Priinciples of Animal Genetics
    • 035.454 Monogastric Production Systems
    • One of:
      • 035.428 Applied Animal Genetics
      • 035.352 Animal Reproduction
      • 061.251 Introduction to Agricultural and Food Marketing

    CYRIL L. ANDERSON - RIDLEY CANADA LTD. AWARD IN ANIMAL SCIENCE - DEGREE

    This scholarship was first awarded in the 1987-1988 academic year. It was established by Mrs. Charlotte Anderson in memory of her husband. This award is currently $500 and is awarded to a student who in fulfilling the graduation requirements has:

    • a minimum G.P.A. of 3.00 for the last 60 credit hours.
    • the highest average standing in:
      • 035.252 Anatomy and Physiology II: Nutrient Utilization
      • 035.351 Feeds and Feeding
      • One of the livestock systems courses (035.452 Ruminant Production Systems - Meat, 035.453 Ruminant Production Systems - Milk, 035.454 Monogastric Production Systems, 035.455 Avian Production Systems)

    S.C. STOTHERS AWARD IN ANIMAL SCIENCE

    This award was established in 1996 upon the retirement of Dr. S.C. Stothers. The current value of the award is $100. The award is given to the graduating student who:

    • has completed 035.456 Issues in Animal Agriculture or its current equivalent.
    • has achieved the highest mark in this course.
    • In the event of a tie, the sessional G.P.A. and/or cumulative G.P.A. will be considered.

    NEVIN ESTATE SCHOLARSHIP - DEGREE

    One scholarship worth $1000 will be offered to a student entering third or fourth year of the degree program with an animal science major and having a special interest in beef cattle production.

    • with enrollment in 035.452 Ruminant Production Systems - Meat.
    • must have a sessional G.P.A. of no less than 3.00.

    • demonstrated financial need.

    • preference to student form the interake region of Manitoba.

    • demonstrated financial need.
    • registered in/or completed 035.251 Anatomy and Physiology I: Control Systems, 035.252 Anatomy and Physiology II: Nutrient Utilization and 035.350 Principles of Animal Genetics or their current equivalents.

    MANITOBA MILK PRODUCERS BURSARY ($1000)

    • demonstrated financial need.
    • completed 30 credit hours at the University of Manitoba.
    • has a minimum cumulative G.P.A. of 2.50.
    • is enrolled in the faculty of agricultural and food sciences or the school of agriculture.
    • preference will be given to a student who has completed or is enrolled in at least one of the following courses:
      • 035.453 Ruminant Production Systems - Milk
      • 078.316 Frozen Dairy Products
      • 078.317 Cheese and Fermented Dairy Products
      • 035.068 Dairy Cattle Production and Management

    MANITOBA PORK COUNCIL BURSARY ($1000)

    • has demonstrated financial need on the standard University of Manitoba bursary application.
    • has completed 24 credit hours in University 1.
    • has a minimum cumulative G.P.A. of 3.00.
    • is enrolled as a full-time student in the animal science program in the faculty of agricultural and food sciences.

    • demonstrated financial need.
    • available to degree, diploma, and first-year Western College of Veterinary Medicine students.
    • preference given to students with an interest in beef production.
    • preference given to degree students who have completed or are enrolled in 035.452 Ruminant Production Systems - Beef, or diploma students who have taken or are enrolled in 035.067 Beef Cattle or their current equivalents.
