GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIPS
& BURSARY AWARDS LISTING
Graduate
students entering and attending school in the department of
animal science are eligible for NSERC and University
of Manitoba graduate fellowships and will be encouraged
to apply for these scholarships when appropriate. Top-up awards are also available for students with national
scholarships.
The faculty
of agricultural and food sciences and the department of animal
science also have a number of scholarships available to either
top up awards or act as stand-alone awards to graduate students

are approximations and will vary dependent on the interest
generated by the fund.

ANDERSON-RIDLEY
CANADA LIMITED GRADUATE FELLOWSHIP
This scholarship
is for a graduate student (MSc or PhD) in the area of
animal nutrition. The fellowship is renewable for one (MSc)
or two subsequent years (PhD), on the basis of a progress
report at the discretion of the selection committee (no re-application
is necessary). Application forms will be made available to
all eligible students by the department of animal science
awards committee and will be reviewed by that committee. The approximate
value of the award is $12 500 annually.
DOUGLAS
CAMPBELL GRADUATE FELLOWSHIP
This scholarship
is available to graduate students in the faculty of agricultural
and food sciences who have applied for a University of Manitoba
graduate fellowship (UMGF). It can be used to provide two
top-up awards to recipients of an UMGF or as one stand-alone award. It is renewable for one (MSc) or
two (PhD) subsequent years based on progress reports and
the discretion of the faculty of agricultural and food sciences
awards committee. Applicants must be full-time graduate students
and have a minimum 3.50 G.P.A. Students considered for this award
have applied for an UMGF. There
are two awards, each having an approximate value of $3700.
CANADIAN
WHEAT BOARD SCHOLARSHIP
Six scholarships
are awarded annually to students involved in grain-related
research programs, cereal plant breeding receiving the highest
priority. The recipient must be a Canadian or landed immigrant
and have a proven record of academic achievement. Their
research must potentially benefit grain production or marketing.
The scholarship is tenable for a three-year term. Application
must be received by the dean's office, faculty of agricultural
and food sciences byFebruary 1. The approximate
value of the award is $16 500 for year one and $18 500 for years
two and three.
CBHEMA
- BROILER BREEDER RESEARCH SCHOLARSHIP
The Canadian
Broiler Hatching Egg Marketing Agency (CBHEMA) provides this scholarship.
The award allows students to perform short-term broiler breeder
research. Projects related to disease control and poultry
health, fertility, feeding, and environmental concerns will
be given top priority. Proposals should contain a summary
of the project, literature review, the hypothesis, objectives
of the research, as well as a description of the research methodology, analysis, and a description of the potential benefits to
broiler hatching egg producers. Applications should also
include a list and CV for the researchers/consultants involved.
Applications are made directly to the CBHEMA. The approximate
value of the award is $2000.
MIRIAM
GREEN ELLIS BURSARIES
Graduate
students in animal science are considered for this bursary
when they apply for a University of Manitoba bursary. The approximate
value of the award is $3000.
FACULTY
OF AGRICULTURAL AND FOOD SCIENCES ENDOWMENT FUND GRADUATE
BURSARIES
Bursaries
are offered to full-time students in the faculty of graduate
studies who are registered in the faculty of agricultural
and food sciences in either the MSc or PhD program. Students
must have demonstrated financial need on the standard University
of Manitoba bursary application. The approximate
value of the award is $1600.
JAMES
GORDON FLETCHER GRADUATE FELLOWSHIP IN AGRICULTURAL AND FOOD
SCIENCES
This fellowship
is for a student entering the MSc program in the faculty
of agricultural and food sciences as a full-time student,
having an outstanding record of undergraduate academic achievement
(>3.50 G.P.A. for last 60 credit hours), and demonstrating an interest in
and potential for research. The fellowship recipient will
receive a renewal of the award upon achieving a minimum G.P.A.
of 3.50 in the first year of their master's program. Applications
are made available annually and reviewed by the faculty awards
committee. The approximate
value of the award is $12 000.

LORD
SELKIRK ASSOCIATION OF RUPERTSLAND AGRICULTURE SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship provides
support to a graduate student doing research in methods to
add value to farm products before they leave the farm gate.
Selection of recipients is based on academic record and applicability
of research to current farm practices and is made by the faculty
awards committee. Applications are made available annually
and reviewed by the faculty awards committee. The approximate
value of the award is $1000.
SYDNEY
L. MORANTZ FUND FOR RESEARCH IN POULTRY SCIENCE
This fund provides
travel assistance, can be used as a bursary to buy minor
equipment, attend conferences, symposia, and even purchase books for
graduate students in poultry science.
NEVIN
ANIMAL BREEDING GRADUATE FELLOWSHIP
This fellowship is available
to students working in beef cattle breeding and genetics.
Preference is given to students engaged in research and development
of shorthorn cattle. The fellowship is awarded annually but
can be held two or three consecutive years in the case of
MSc or PhD students respectively. No application is required as the recipient is determined by the department of animal science
awards committee. The approximate
value of the award is
$11 000.
ROBERT
J. PARKER FELLOWSHIP IN SWINE SCIENCE
A student
must apply to the department of animal science awards committee
for this award. He or she must be a full-time graduate
student in the department of animal science, be working in
the area of swine research, and be deemed by the selection
committee to show great promise in the field of swine science. The approximate
value of the award is $5000.

THOMSON SCHOLARSHIP
A student
must hold a BSA and register in the graduate program in
agriculture to compete for this award. In case of a tie, a
rural student will be given preference. A student may receive
the award a second time but only through competition with
other candidates. No application is required. The approximate
value of the award is $1400.
KENNETH
G. WERSH FELLOWSHIP
This fellowship
is offered as a top-up award to a new recipient of the University
of Manitoba graduate fellowship (UMGF). Students must be Canadian
citizens or permanent residents and be registered in the second
year of a master's or third year of a doctoral program in agricultural
and food sciences. Preference is given to students in animal
science from rural Manitoba. The fellowship may be offered
as a stand alone if no student in animal science receives
the UMGF. The approximate
value of the award is $3800.
NORVAL
C. YOUNG GRADUATE FELLOWSHIP IN ANIMAL SCIENCE
This fellowship
is offered in the area of animal nutrition, and it is awarded
annually either as a top-up award to the University of Manitoba
graduate fellowship (UMGF) or as a stand-alone award. Preference
is given to a MSc student. The award can be held for two
years (MSc) or three years (PhD) for students holding
an UMGF. The recipient is determined by the department of animal
science awards committee. The approximate
value of the award is $3500.
