The agricultural community experiences a large number of job related accidents compared to other sectors. The very nature of the industry exposes farmers and agricultural workers to potentially dangerous situations that can lead to injuries and all too often to deaths.

Most accidents are preventable. Knowledge of and attention to situations that can lead to injuries are key elements in reducing the risk of accidents. The Diploma in Agriculture program at the University of Manitoba is a practical and applied program for those who wish to return to the farm or for those who will enter a wide variety of careers in the agricultural sector. Educating young people about safety and health issues is key to instilling a culture of safety in the agricultural community.

Check out the Safe Manitoba: Health and Safety 101 website for an e-course development by the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board to provide workers 24 and under with important health and safety information.

The PowerPoint presentations on this CD were developed as resource materials for instructors in the Diploma in Agriculture program. The presentations were developed as instructional material for those courses that contain topics on safety. The courses are listed by the current course number and course title. There is duplication of information amongst the presentations in order to ensure that each course contains all the relevant information on the topic under discussion.

Funding for the development of these resources was provided by the Community Initiatives and Research Program, Workers Compensation Board of Manitoba and was supported by Minerva Manitoba and Manitoba Labour and Immigration, Workplace Safety and Health Division. Thank you to Mr. Roberto Duarte for preparing these resource materials.
