Physical Plant

Physical Plant recently achieved the Certification of Recognition (COR) awarded by the Construction Safety Association of Manitoba.  The COR certification is a nationally recognized safety program and the University of Manitoba’s Physical Plant is the first post-secondary institute in Canada to achieve this accreditation.

INTRODUCTION    
 
The Physical Plant Department is responsible for the planning, design, construction, operation and maintenance of the Fort Garry and Bannatyne Campuses, Glenlea Research Station, Delta Marsh and Star Lake Field Stations, and the President’s residence.  The Fort Garry and Bannatyne Campuses contain more than 100 buildings with a total area in excess of 6.3 million gross square feet.  The Fort Garry and Bannatyne Campuses consists of over 575 acres, of which 303 acres is developed land.  Physical Plant has a full time baseline funded staff of 317.5 staff and a full time income funded staff of 65.

Physical Plant is responsible for the administration and management of more than $113.45 million in 2008/09, of which $28.24 million is operating funds, $15.58 million in utilities, $3.02 million in Renovations and Equipment Capital, $ 15.23 million in Capital Debt/Infrastructure projects,  $1.38 million in Indirect Costs of Research projects, and over $50 million in other construction/renovation projects.  During this planning period, the design and construction for Project Domino will be underway which will add an estimated 241,500 gross square feet of space to be maintained and redeveloped.  In addition, the 120-acre Southwood Golf Course property passes to the University’s control in February 2011.
