Mixed Paper and Cardboard
Faculty and support staff
on both the Fort Garry and Bannatyne campuses all have the opportunity to recycle mixed paper (including cardboard) at their desk side. Caretaking Services collects mixed paper and delivers it to the garbage and recycling room where it is collected on one of two recycling days - Tuesday or Thursday based on building volume. If your office or department has an unusual amount of paper waste to send out then a special clean-out recycling bin(s) can be requested on a temporary basis.

Students living in residence also have access to paper recycling right in their own rooms. Each room is equipped with a blue box where paper; boxboard and beverage containers can be put. Once full each student is responsible for emptying the contents into the correct bin in the garbage/recycling room located on their floor. If a student has a cardboard box, it will need to be flattened and wedged beside the bin and the wall in the garbage/recycling room.

Other students on campus can put their paper waste into grey paper recycling bins located around each building.

Containers
The University of Manitoba’s Recycling and Environmental Group (UMREG) maintains beverage container collection program in buildings on both the Fort Gary and Bannatyne campuses. If you do not currently have a beverage container recycling receptacle near your office, but would like to request placement of one, please contact UMREG at - 474-9118.

To accommodate various demands, UMREG has several different bin types to suit the campus needs:

Blue box - These bins hold approximately 40 litres, and are of the typical curbside variety. They are most commonly placed under tables, desks, chairs, or displays, and are used in areas where there is little traffic, but where recyclables are still generated. Please see the blue bin recyclables section for what you can place in the blue boxes.

Round blue bin - Or as we like to call them - little blues. These bins hold approximately 100 gallons and are best suited for areas with moderate volumes of recyclables, where they could be fitted under a table, or in a corner of a room. These are most commonly placed in staff or student lounges. Please see the blue bin recyclables section for what you can place in this bin.

240L Bin (BB / BG) - These bins hold 240 litres. This is the most common bin that UMREG has in its recycling arsenal. You can find these strategically placed all over campus from residences, to lecture halls, to the various athletic facilities. There are two types of 240 litre bins; a blue, and a green version. Please see the blue bin recyclables section for what you can place in the blue bins, and the green bin recyclables section for what you can place in the green bins.

360L Bin (BB-360) - These bins hold 360 litres. As wall space is generally limited, these bins go in areas where this wall space is at a premium, for example in some residences and kitchens. The wall-footprint is basically the same as our 240 litre bins, but it is longer and slightly taller.

Blue Bin Recyclables

The blue bins can handle any recyclable object. Sometimes there is not enough glass generated at a particular location, so instead of hogging valuable room, we place a single blue bin instead of a blue bin and a green bin. This means you CAN put glass in the blue bins. You can also put in aluminum cans, steel cans, milk cartons, tetra paks (juice boxes), and any plastic that has a recyclable symbol with a number inside it on the bottom. We currently recycle all plastics numbered 1 - 7.

Green Bin Recyclables

Green bins hold glass. Please do not throw anything other than glass objects into the glass recycling bins. No ceramics, no Styrofoam or paper cups, no pantyhose, only glass.

Bin Locations

In the near future, this page will have a list of all the bin locations on campus. If you do not have a bin near you, this page will also have a form which you can fill out to request a new bin.

Residence Recycling

Paper, cardboard and beverage containers

Students living in residence have access to paper recycling right in their own rooms. Each room is equipped with a blue box for paper, boxboard and beverage containers. Once full each student is responsible for emptying the contents into the correct bin in the garbage/recycling room located on their floor. If a student has a cardboard box, it will need to be flattened and wedged beside the bin and the wall in the garbage/recycling room.

*Please note that the bins in student's rooms are property of the University. If they are missing from the room at the end of the semester, it will be the responsibility of the student to pay the replacement fee of $10.

Other items

At the end of each semester, Housing and Student Life along with Big Brothers/Big Sisters partner to bring the Big Smiles program to residence students. A Special bin will be available for students to place goods they no longer need such as clothing, binders, electronics, bedding, etc.

Mini-Bin Program

One of our most successful approaches in our recycling program is to increase the University of Manitoba’s diversion rates and decrease landfill costs by having individuals take responsibility for their own waste through our Mini-Bin Program. By seeing how much waste is produced each day, and taking responsibility for it, it is hoped that each individual will be able to find ways to reduce it. For example, if most of the waste is non-recyclables from coffee and lunch, perhaps reusable containers or ceramic coffee mugs could be an option.

Over the last few years, Faculty and Staff in Physical Plant, St. John’s College and in sections of the Administration building have become part of the program to successfully take responsibility for their waste and have been effectively aiding the University in decreasing the tonnages sent to landfill. The Waste Prevention Office is using the success of these buildings, along with the campus-wide programs at the University of British Columbia, University of Toronto and both Manitoba's and Ontario's Provincial Governments, as a model from which to move forward.

The most recent buildings to take part in the mini-bin program include the Engineering complex (E1, 2 and 3) and the General Office at Machray Hall.

If you or your department would like further information on this program, please contact the waste prevention coordinator at - 474-9608.

Caretaking services provide the collection of organics for one restaurant while food service staff services the other two.

Special Clean-out Recycling Bins

If your office has an unusual amount of paper waste to send out then a special clean-out recycling bin(s) can be requested on a temporary basis.

Please call - 474-9608 or send an email to wpo@cc.umanitoba.ca at least two days prior with the following information: date required, date completed, building and room number, name and contact phone number or email.

The Waste Prevention Coordintor will deliver a grey bin or cart with wheels to the specified location on the date required. Special Request Bins are available depending on stock available on hand and to accommodate the whole campus, we typically limit the number of bins out to two or the number of carts to one.

Once it is full, you can leave it outside of your door for the caretaker to take away the following morning. You may use the bin multiple times until the date of completion indicated on your request form. If you need it longer than the date originally requested call or email the Waste Prevention Coordinator.
