Transportation
At the University of Manitoba we continue to make improvements and important advances towards encouraging alternative transportation.  Below is a list of some of what is happening:

  • Over 500 bike-rack parking spots
  • Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) (see photos)
  • Reduced transit fare for Post-Secondary students
  • Extra wide shoulder along University Crescent acts as bike lane for cyclists
  • The University of Manitoba is a member of Carpool.ca
  • Transportation Alternatives at the U of Manitoba
  • Anti-Idling reminder signs
  • The Bike Dungeon (474-9118)
~ Initiated and operated by students, the Bike Dungeon is a space where students, faculty and/or staff can go to receive training and tips on how to repair and maintain a bicycle.  Bike Dungeon volunteers also reclaim bikes that have been abandoned and deconstruct them for their parts.

Our Love Affair With the Car

The internal combustion engine is the single greatest source of our greenhouse gas emissions. There are more than 17 million motor vehicles in Canada, one for every second Canadian, and then some. Eighty percent of Canadians commute to work by car. Only ten percent use public transit.
