SELL YOURSELF: THE CAREER HANDBOOK FOR CANADIAN UNIVERSITY STUDENTS AND PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS
Volume 10 Number 4.
Sell Yourself! offers information from a nation-wide survey of employers of Canadian university graduates. Descriptions of 137 different careers suitable!for university graduates and how to start preparing for them now are outlined. Lists of over 1000 career pamphlets and other publications with details on how to obtain them and information about which Canadian universities offer particular graduate degrees and professional programs and their entrance exams are offered. How to find out about and apply for various programs, internships, competitions, and awards available to Canadian students and graduates is included as well as suggestions regarding the use of career planning and placement agencies. There are tips on r6sum6-writing, preparing for interviews, and extra-curricular activities to give the reader an advantage in the job market. Even how to become "promotable" once hired is considered.
The rationale for this book is that many excellent career publications and counselling services exist but most students do not use them. The primary reason is ignorance of these resources or at least a lack of awareness of what they offer or where to start. The author has done the homework for students to help them find the kind(s) of information they need and want.
Sell Yourself is a really valuable tool for academically-oriented students. Some materials are valuable for all job hunters, but the vocabulary is fairly advanced. Many of the references are to publications produced in the United States. There are no pictures, and examples are very limited.
The author is a recent university graduate who has attempted to include the types of materials she found she needed in her career planning. It is a worthwhile book for all libraries.
