Diet Strategy was written by Malcolm Dean, a broadcast journalist and writer, with Ronda Clanfield, who is with the national news department of a major Canadian television network. This is the first book on the topic of dieting and nutrition for both of the authors.

Dean approaches the whole concept of obesity and dieting sensibly, realistically, and rationally. He presents several basic premises. First, North Americans are preoccupied (often unnecessarily) with being overweight. Second, any diet followed will bring about weight loss, but this weight will reappear with the resumption of the previous eating habits; therefore, the most sensible diet is one that changes the eating habits minimally over a long period of time. However, the decision about the "right" diet is left to the reader.

The information in the book is easily read and understood by the layperson; a quiet humour pervades throughout. In the first section, Dean provides information to reduce the guilt that dieters often experience. Next he presents basic information about dieting, nutrition, and exercise. The third section is a critical analysis and explanation of the currently popular diets, and the final section is a collection of dieting tips.

There are neither illustrations nor a bibliography, but the index is easy to follow. The type is easy to read. This book is a refreshing approach to dieting and should appeal to high school students and adults who might be prospective dieters.
