MUSIC DIRECTORY CANADA '83
Volume 11 Number 6.
The editorial staff and publishers are to be commended for the vast amount of work involved in compiling this important directory, which is to appear annually. This guidebook to a wide range of Canadian music-related companies and organizations has thirty-seven divisions, including the following: "Acoustic Consultants," "Associations" (most provinces are represented), "Awards," "Competitions," "Booking Agencies," "Music Festivals," "Opera Companies," "Rehearsal Studios," and "Symphony Orchestras." Category listings are alphabetical, with some appropriately listed by province and city. Since there is no index, access must be through the broader table of contents. This lack may be bothersome to users, but it is not a major obstacle to the entries, which contain full addresses, name of contact persons, and in some cases brief descriptive comments. Because listings represent only those parties who responded to a questionnaire sent by the publishers and returned by a designated deadline, the directory cannot be called totally comprehensive. I personally noted no entry, for example, for the Hart House Orchestra, since only symphony orchestras are listed. This omission leads to the noticeable lack of entries for smaller folk music groups, chamber orchestras, and jazz and rock groups. Fans and would-be-musicians will be disappointed here. This is a much needed resource directory, and it is to be hoped that more and fuller entries will appear in future editions. Recommended for all secondary, post-secondary, public and special libraries.
