The "General" was the unofficial volunteer school crossing guard in Bridgeport, Ontario for more than twenty years. When the village was absorbed by the city of Kitchener, the new council replaced the General with an official crossing guard despite much community protest. However, the two worked as a team until the General's death in 1978.

Frank Etherington has based his fictional work on this factual framework and offers us a look at life in a rural Ontario that is fast disappearing. The story of Jainin, who becomes the General's special friend, is necessarily superficial as it covers five years and a political fight in less than fifty pages. The most fascinating aspect of the book is the photocopied newspaper articles dealing with the events in the story.

The General would be useful for language arts and social science classes as well as for recreational reading in an elementary school. Recommended.
