As a child, I sometimes managed to finish an exciting book with the aid of a flashlight under the covers after my official lights out time. If I were ten years old again, I am sure that is what I would be doing with Alison's Ghosts.

Mary Alice and John Downie have achieved what so many authors have failed to do: they have written a Canadian adventure story for girls with the emphasis on the adventure rather than the Canadian. The Nova Scotian setting and Micmac Indian shaman form the backdrop, but Alison, her family and friends hold the spotlight. Ghosts, mystery, and suspense will appeal to pre-teen readers. Attractive black-and-white illustrations by Paul McCusker, lots of natural conversation and type that is just the right size combine to make Alison's Ghosts a winner. Librarians should order a good supply for their paperback racks because this one will not stay there for long. Highly recommended.
