It takes no great leap of imagination to figure out that a puppy who waits for the day he too will walk on two legs is projecting a child's preoccupation with growing up. That he wonders whether people will like him despite this shortcoming may be considered the natural extension of such thoughts.

Then why would such a book, openly marketed for children, carry with it such strong overtones of adult taste? Aislin, for instance, has created an engaging pup, with just the right touch of incredulity, but he has illustrated him with the same heavy pen and ink style that characterizes ' his political cartoons, this providing just the wrong touch of the foreboding. Likewise, Sarrazin presents us with a delightfully intriguing situation-one that we can easily identify with at different stages of our lives. But she has left this situation unresolved, reminding those of us who have been through it already that one may occasionally take solace in maturity, and leaving those who have not to wonder blankly (and perhaps fearfully) if their own concerns will be dealt with so abruptly. All in all, an engaging author, a witty illustrator, but a product destined to suffer from the very best of its mixed parentage. Not recommended.
