Diane Griffin is a past president of the Canadian Nature Federation and the current executive director of the Island (i.e., Prince Edward Island) Nature Federation. The photography for the book was done by Wayne Barrett and Anne MacKay, also from the island, who have contributed to other Oxford picture books, such as The Gulf of Saint Lawrence* and Spirit of Place**

Atlantic Wildflowers contains colourful photographs of 129 species of flowering plants that are found in the Atlantic Provinces and northern New England. The entries are arranged in phylogenelic order, an arrangement that may not be very clear to the lay user. There is however, a good index of scientific as well as common names, and the photographs encourage the browser. The text entry for each example gives a common name, the latin name, genus, family, etymology, habitat, range, longevity, flowering times, features, fruit, height, ecology, uses, horticulture, similar species, and references 10 other works in which information can be found. Text entries are brief and factual.

The book does not pretend to be an exhaustive survey of the plants of the area, nor is it a field guide. The real beauty of the collection is found in the photographs of wild flowers that it provides. It is possible to identify a particular flower just by looking through the pictures. This is a lovely gift book and a useful reference tool. There is a glossary and a bibliography. Recommended.
