The editors of OWL Magazine have put together two books on pets that will delight those youngsters with a thirst for facts. Caring for your pet, name, physical characteristics, wild cousins, famous cartoon cats and dogs, different breeds are only a part of the contents. (Games and puzzles, in the style of the magazine, are included.)

Each page contains one or more illustrations often in glossy color. Information is concise so the books are easy to read and pleasant to browse through.

Format could be a problem for libraries: in paperback, the books will not stand up to the wear and tear they will receive. Not only the illustrations, but the print extend into the centre of the pages making rebinding next to impossible. Although the table of contents is clear and easy to use, there is no index to allow quick access to information. Indeed, anyone hoping to use these books as reference material may be disappointed as well in that each area of cats and dogs is only touched upon with nothing covered to any real depth.

Nevertheless, given the number of children always interested in books about cats and dogs, this book is recommended for both school and public libraries , for use with readers in grades 3 and up.
