This is the story of a ten-year-old girl and her life as a member of a family where the father goes fishing for a living. It is based on the author's life and set in the coastal waters of British Columbia. The story is even-keyed, but so well written that the reader's interest is never lost. It begins when the fishing season starts and carries on until the following year when a new season is about to begin. The climax of the story comes when the father invites his daughter to be his crew member on a fishing trip. It is her first time to haul in a fish on her own, and also her first time to eat fish head soup, eyes and all.

The illustrator, Raphael J. MacLaughlin, is a professional artist who has supplemented this otherwise small book with a fascinating collection of scenic pictures painted in sepia. MacLaughlin called upon a long-time fisherman in British Columbia waters to provide the detailed knowledge of fishing boats, in this case a trawler. A list of technical words that describe the trawler is included at the back, the definitions provided in picture form.

This is an all-round book that could be of interest to those already knowledgeable about the life of a fisherman in coastal waters and to others not so fortunate.
