This is one of a series of three books edited by Daniel Connor, (MA Oxon, Modern History; MA UBC, Canadian History) and Doreen Bethune-Johnson (PhD, Curriculum and Ethnomusicology, Assistant Professor Emeritus, Faculty of Education, UBC). It is organized into five units: "Trading Furs in New Caledonia," "Mining for Gold in British Columbia," "Building the Canadian Pacific Railway," "Coming to Canada - The Ukrainians," and "Becoming a Canadian Citizen."

Most of the text consists of extracts from letters, newspaper articles, diaries, journals, and from personal reminiscences and interviews. The accounts written by children, describing pioneer schools, and Lady Agnes Macdonald's description of her ride through the Rocky Mountains on the cowcatcher of the new CPR train, make lively reading. The unit on the Ukrainian settlements in western Canada contains detailed information on pioneering and ethnic customs. The last unit is an account of a Vietnamese family's arrival in Canada in 1981 and of their preparation for Canadian citizenship. It includes basic information on the Canadian system of government.

The book is copiously illustrated with maps, diagrams, charts, photographs, and reproductions of paintings. Credits are listed for the illustrations, but not for quotations from diaries, journals, etc. A glossary and index are appended. Definitions and pronunciation of unfamiliar words and names, and questions to stimulate discussion are provided in marginal notes. At the end of each chapter are a word checklist and activities under the headings, "Recalling the Past," "Investigating the Present," and "Predicting the Future,"

The text is interesting, easy to read, well organized, and up-to-date. The thought-provoking activities would be particularly useful for advanced students. Recommended.
