Author of The Molson Saga* and The Money Labyrinth (Doubleday. 1984), Woods grew up in Ottawa and occasionally attended social functions at Rideau Hall. At nineteen he joined the Governor General's Foot Guards and participated in the regiment's ceremonial duties. His biography of Sauvé has a strong sense of the history of her office and also succeeds in conveying the special characteristics and abilities of Canada's first female Speaker of the House and the first female Governor General.

Woods states that although he received full co-operation from his subject, his is not an officially approved biography. In addition to Sauvé, he interviewed members of her family and staff and consulted politicians and journalists in Ottawa. A list of people who provided information is contained in "Acknowledgements." There is no bibliography, but printed sources quoted are cited in the text.

In an anecdotal manner, Woods describes Sauvé's life from her childhood in Prud'homme, Saskatchewan and Ottawa to her career as journalist and politician, Speaker of the House of Commons, and contributions and duties as the Queen's representative. Black-and-white illustrations include family and official photographs. The index, of both names and topics, is sufficiently detailed for student research and the writing style is fluent and informal. Students from grade 8 through senior grades could enjoy the total biography or use segments to enhance study of Canadian politics and government, family life in Ottawa in the 1920s and 1930s, or as an example of a Canadian woman's achievement.
