Cultures in Conflict is the second volume issued by the Legal Resource Centre of Alberta as a resource book for teachers and other youth leaders. The aim of this study is to develop basic ideas of justice and tolerance in our multi-racial society. The two topics are the arrival of the Mounties at Fort Macleod and the expulsion of the Acadians, By showing the background and feelings of those directly involved in a clash of cultures, the study should increase understanding and help to eliminate prejudice and stereotyping.

Activities, chiefly dramatic, but also relating to music and art, are carefully outlined as suggestions for the pupils. The projects are ones that should prove successful with most young people. The text is well organized, utilizing different sizes of type and colour. Illustrations and drawings have been selected from the collection of the Glenbow Museum, Parks Canada, and the Public Archives. There are five sessions telling of the first meetings of the Indians and the Mounties and three sessions about the French-English conflict in Acadia. As these conflicts have modern counterparts in the Canadian mosaic, the topics are wisely selected.

Social studies and dramatic arts teachers will both find valuable material here to enrich their classes. High school groups could use the pictures and other source material including the bibliography. Some teachers will want copies for themselves, or even class sets, depending on the emphasis allotted to these topics in the provincial curriculum. The projects could well be used by church, library, or community groups as the careful instructions would be helpful for volunteer youth leaders. I look forward to the next volume.
