Jubilee of Death* and It Takes All Kinds** are reprinted in this latest of Oberon's handsomely produced collections of Souster's works. It takes All Kinds has about seventy poems, mostly short, although there are two long sequences based on Alex Colville's paintings and one of random thoughts from Souster's engagement calendar. Sports poems include "Play Ball" and "Forward Pass" and there are effective nature lyrics such as "In Langmuir Wood" and "My Proud Fleet of Autumn. Souster's concern for the disadvantaged shines through in "Bagwoman. Berkeley Street" and "Veteran, Second World War." "Class of '37," a reminiscence in prose, is a powerful look at bigotry in the schools that will surely spur discussion among young people.

Jubilee of Death tells the story of Dieppe through the words of twenty-five participants ranging from Churchill and Mountbatten to the Canadian general McNaughton, who concludes, the Canadians who I commanded went as lambs to a slaughter politically essential, militarily indefensible.

Packed with details and 160 pages long, Jubilee will be of interest mainly to those who have substantial background knowledge of World War II.

Public librarians will turn to this collection around Remembrance Day; in high schools it will be useful to senior students researching contemporary Canadian poetry and to teachers looking for thought-provoking material for classes.
