The Earth and How it Works is intended to acquaint Intermediate level children with the physical world around them. The four-colour annotated illustrations are clear and attractive and dominate the work, although the concise text is explanatory and written at a level for children aged eight to twelve. Technical terms (italicized or placed in brackets) are succinctly explained and a glossary complements the text, but not all italicized words are in the glossary or index. Different aspects of physical geography on all continents-the Earth in space, land forms, rock types, climate and pollution-are covered in separate chapters. Metric measurement is used throughout and the work is up to date, showing satellites in orbit and solar sails on cargo ships.

There are many irritating inaccuracies: on page 14, the Pacific plate moves in from the right, not the left; on page 21, the second reference to Prince William Sound should have a capital "S" for Sound; on page 32, the sunbather is inappropriately curvaceous (perhaps a mention should have been made of the dangers of sunbathing with the depletion of the ozone layer!); on page 48, the boats at anchor should swing with the tide; and on page 52 and the title page, the sun appears to be lower on the horizon at 12:00 noon than at 1:00 p.m.

This work is nevertheless entertaining, attractive and informative. The board binding is sturdy and opens flat for group sharing. The Earth and How it Works is recommended for purchase by public and upper elementary school librarians.
