Six-year-old Warner, weary of Mom's constant reminders, refuses to let her join his class trip to the zoo. He sets out without Mom; nevertheless, helpful strangers appear throughout the day to give Warner pertinent advice. The giveaway is a pair of red sneakers, one with an untied lace, worn by each stranger and by a very tired Mom who greets Warner on his return. Warner, of course, has figured out the situation and has the last word: "Mommy, don't forget to tie your shoelaces."

First-time authors Seligman and Mabin have written a picture-book certain to amuse and delight young children and their parents. They run Toronto's Mabin alternative school and know their audience well. Reminders from mom are part of every child's experience and this story is presented with just the right touch of tongue-in-cheek humour. Pre-school to grade 2 children will enjoy the fun, the repeated refrain of "Don't forget!" and the sense of being in the know as they track Mom's red sneakers.

Illustrations are by Linda Hendry (Malcolm's Runaway Soap (North Winds Press, 1988) and There's a Dragon in My Closet). They are large, cheerful, and full of the details of a child's everyday life. Warner is an appealing bespectacled little boy, and the infamous red sneakers are just obvious enough to gradually point the reader to Mom's secret.

The book is very nicely produced. Format, layout and type are excellent. It is recommended for all school and public libraries.
