With the popularity of the television series "Degrassi High" (previously "Degrassi Junior High"), it is no wonder that as a school librarian I find that my titles from the series are always out of the library.

In this novel Joey and his friends Wheels and Snake are graduating from grade 8. Joey, the only one of the three unconcerned about school, is also the only one to fail grade 8. However, the boys are also preparing for their first successful performance by their band, The Zit Remedy, at the graduation dance. As the story progresses we see the various ways Joey tries to handle his failure. By signing up the band in the Battle of the Bands contest, he foresees a future of music stardom and no school.

The story moves quickly and is sprinkled with the typical teenage jargon and problems that young readers find appealing. The characters are predictable but true to their television personalities, so there is no new territory here. For the odd reader unfamiliar with the television series, the plot may be a little too pat, but still a good read.

Recommended for junior high and middle school libraries.
