THE UNIVERSE IS ONE POEM: FOUR POETS TALK POETRY
Edited by George Swede
Reviewed by John Bainbridge
Volume 18 Number 4
Four Canadian poets write about their experiences of and methods for teaching poetry to children. This collection of short discourses is edited by George Swede, who also contributes his own article. Using examples from their own work, all of the writers attempt to show how the creative drive can be drawn out of children and channelled into the various forms of poetic expression. Swede describes how he presents poetry to both secondary and elementary students, concluding with a typical question and answer session dealing with such issues as, "How do you get your ideas?" and "How much do you rewrite?" Penn Kemp discusses the methods she uses to encourage students to "... discover the source of their creative impulse...". Ted Plantos explores the use of imagery and Yvonne Trainer looks at some practical methodology in the teaching of poetry, such as classroom atmosphere, asking questions, and some poetry writing exercises. All of the contributors are published poets and experienced teachers. The style is simple and concise. The many teaching suggestions are practical and often clever. Accordingly, this book will be an excellent resource for language arts teachers at all levels. Recommended.
