A Lesbian in the Pulpit explores a topical issue that is causing havoc within the United Church of Canada. Should homosexuals be allowed to be ministers? Host Peter Downie interviews a lesbian minister ordained in 1976 who is currently a practising United Church minister in Saskatchewan. The minister and her "spouse" share their feelings and beliefs on homosexuality with the audience. Other church members and ministers are interviewed so that both sides of the question are examined. The fears of those against the acceptance of homosexuals in the ministry, as well as some of the reasons for these fears and beliefs, are identified.

In addition to the ordination issue, the causes and effects of being homosexual are discussed. Family members of the minister discuss their reaction to the news that their daughter is lesbian. The minister's spouse is a social worker who was once married and has a married daughter who has trouble accepting her mother's homosexuality. Both women feel that their sexual orientation has little effect upon their ability to carry out their jobs. As a hospital chaplain, the minister is dealing primarily with people who are dying and are not concerned with the life-style of the pastoral care giver. The social worker is a counsellor at an AIDS support group.

Although the presentation is very non-judgemental, the audience is left with the feeling that if the United Church does ban homosexual ministers they will be losing at least one special minister. This video would be an excellent vehicle for discussion in a social studies or religion class.
