Reviews of four current events are presented in this video by "The National" newsroom team. Syntheses of the Iraq crisis, Oka, Donald Marshall, and Ben Johnson are presented in a clear and straightforward manner. The pleasant and avuncular Knowlton Nash introduces each sequence as well as provides the voice-over and links between various sections of each story. He does not deny that these are complex problems with no simple black-and-white answers. Live footage, graphs, maps and post-incident interviews flesh out each review, and indeed, if a classroom teacher were able to design an animated lesson plan, then I suspect the results would be very similar to these mini-documentaries.

CBC-TV News in Review is a Canadian perspective on the news this teacher would have no qualms in presenting to a social studies/modern history class for discussion (however, due to educational leave, this video was not field tested). I can well believe the makers' claim that "experienced broadcasters, media professionals, and classroom teachers are involved in the production of each program." The resource guide (with reproduction of material freely authorized) was - like the video - excellent. Classroom activities varied from mix and match and fill in the blanks to comprehension exercises and critical analysis.

One suggestion to the video makers is this: provide more maps, especially when relating far away places to Canada.

All in all a good effort, and I hope CBC-TV News in Review keeps up this standard. I reviewed an NFB video about a year ago, Only the News That Fits, which was haphazard and self-indulgent. It dealt with how news is selected and cropped to fit the nation's nightly headlines. If its makers could be coaxed into watching these documentaries, then a valuable lesson might be learned.
