Louise Evans, teacher and writer, has put together a delightful collection of anecdotes recounting her experiences with animals in general and a ferret in particular. To give us some background on her love of animals, she begins with childhood stories about how her interest in animals developed, from bringing stray animals home to working as an assistant in a Scottish animal hospital. The six introductory chapters also serve to introduce the reader to some other unusual animal friends like Lina the fox, Sammy the snake and McGinty, the horse with an attitude problem.

While teaching in British Columbia, the author became the proud owner of a ferret and the reader is then introduced to 'Toots" in the remaining seven chapters. The reader learns what ferrets eat, how they entertain themselves, what their sleeping habits are like, and what is considered typical ferret behaviour. The reader also learns that raising a ferret is not an easy task and requires patience and stamina.

The book is extremely easy to read with very short chapters and includes eight pages of black-and-white photographs by the author and her husband Roy. Although there is no index, a table of contents is included. However, since the book is so short, it is relatively easy to find any information about ferrets just by reading. I found the book a very readable non-fiction title and would recommend it as an elementary and/or middle school purchase.
