Volume 19 Number 2
1991 March

This pleasant picture-book details a pre-school child's day with her grandmother. Grandma is first "Nana Surprise" who plans a surprise breakfast and outing. She is then "Nana Water" as the two spend a happy day at the beach. Finally, and best of all, she is "Nana Moon" who "makes bedtime cozy."

This is Mason's first children's book, and while her text could be more polished, she has captured the young child's point of view very well. She is equally successful in making the reader feel the bond and love between Nana and her granddaughter. The full-page black-and-white drawings by Etta Moffat are very appealing and reinforce the story's intimate mood. Each page also has an attractive decorative border.

While this is not one of the year's outstanding books, it has quality and quiet appeal. The theme is a popular one, and it is well suited to the intended audience. A good supplemental purchase for day-care. Kindergarten and public library collections.
