This clearly written book presents a comprehensive guide to using books in beginning reading. The authors are both educators in Toronto area school systems. They bring to the text an extensive knowledge of early reading and classroom teaching experience. This background shows in their conviction that teaching children to read using "real" books is the only realistic way to teach reading.

The book is a well-organized look at the reading process, the three- to-eight-year-old reader, and the materials that will nurture a love of reading and writing in these children. It presents such topics as choosing books for your classroom, stages of reading development, organizing your classroom, and the components of a reading/writing program. The concluding chapter presents a portrait of a typical day in a Primary classroom.

One of the most valuable aspects of this excellent teacher resource is the bibliography. It includes various categories of classroom resources, including wordless picture-books, poetry and nursery rhymes, concept books, pattern books to independent reading materials and early novels. It ends with a comprehensive professional reading list.

I would recommend this book to every beginning teacher and to all Primary teachers, regardless of how long they have taught! The clear, concise, organized chapters and wealth of information combined with the authors' enthusiasm for teaching reading with "real" books make this book a "must have" for every professional library shelf.
