Following the success of her first educational video for children on dinosaurs, DeBeck has created another highly entertaining and very educational video about the growth, harvest, use, traditions and history of the cranberry plant.

A variety of narrators, including a host of children who live and work on a cranberry bog in Richmond B.C., take the viewer through the seasons to highlight visually the unique ecosystem of the bog and the planting, pollination and harvesting of this unique food crop.

The author uses every opportunity to incorporate a large variety of activities, crafts and recipes for food applications for juice and tea to sauce to muffins to demonstrate the versatility of the "crane berry." Reenactments of the Pilgrim Thanksgiving, mouthwatering tables of turkey and cranberry sauce, historical footage of cranberry harvesting, and a lively musical accompaniment add dimension and depth to what is already visually rich. Watching the flooding, blooming and "corralling" of cranberries helps children understand the process of harvesting in a way that words could never describe. They'll never look at a cranberry the same way again!

The small but very useful teacher's guide that accompanies the video has practical experiments, applications and illustrations to round out a study session for children anywhere from five to twelve, especially around the fall and winter celebrations of Thanksgiving and Christmas. Every school and every children's department should have a copy!
