I have always enjoyed the sport of orienteering and thus found The Pathfinder's Handbook a delight. The book not only covers how to use a compass and maps but also goes into detail about map symbols, grids, direction, routes, and pathfinding, just to name a few. Included among the factual information are activities that the children might like to try.

The book is organized so that each two-page spread covers a topic. The topics start with the very simple concept of not getting lost in your own neighbourhood and lead right up to the sport of orienteering using a compass and a map.

Co-authors Mark Smith and Christine Kennedy not only own and operate Chrismar Mapping Services Inc., they also create many recreational and educational aids for anything from mapping to wilderness navigation. Besides having impressive credentials, the authors have a wealth of experience. Among other things, Mark Smith was commissioned by the Department of National Defence to write an orienteering instructor's manual. Christine Kennedy has helped to develop orienteering instruction programs for York University and Bark Lake Leadership Centre as well as participated in developing training programs.

This kit makes a great gift and is something that I would buy for my library to motivate students. Teachers could use this as a reference when introducing the subject of mapping, map making, compasses, globes, atlases and orienteering.

The only fault that I could find with this kit is that I would have preferred a better quality compass. However, as an introduction to compasses, the one enclosed is okay.

This kit is a great idea. I'm sure that children will enjoy reading the book and doing the activities.
