Adventures with Miss Flint is Don Sawyer's second children's book. He previously published Donna Meets Coyote (Secwepemc, 1988) as well as Tomorrow is School (Goodread Biographies, 1984) and Where the Rivers Meet.

Adventures with Miss Flint is a series of episodes from a father's recollections of his most horrid teacher, Miss Flint. Each is told to daughter Parish in "one-up-on-you" style to help her overcome her concerns at school. "Aw come on, Dad ... She couldn't have been that bad" becomes the tease for the reader, who must find out exactly how bad a teacher can be!

As discomfiting as her situation may be, Parish soon realizes that there is just no topping her father's fourth grade teacher, who is every bit as cold, sharp and durable as her name suggests. "The frown lines around her mouth seemed chipped into her face, and the grey, lilac-smelling powder she sprinkled on each morning sifted into the deep web of cracks that spread like lacework across her forehead and down her cheeks." Miss Flint is unrelenting in her regimented approach to teaching and even resorts to the use of a whistle to keep the children in line. Readers will take heart, though, from the barrage of counter-attacks and practical jokes launched by Miss Flint's students.

These amusing stories and intriguing illustrations will entertain youngsters who enjoy making connections to their own classroom experiences and is recommended for the elementary library collection.
