Scholarships, Bursaries, and Prizes

General Information Thanks to the generous support of donors and the Manitoba Scholarships and Bursaries Initiative, St John’s College is able to assist College members and graduates in meeting their education costs through a variety of scholarships, bursaries, and prizes totaling over $86,000.

College Membership: To be eligible for most awards you must be registered as a St John’s College member by the application deadline.  An annual membership fee of no more than $20 will be added to your U of M account. Graduates and students who change faculties may need to re-register as members.  College membership is open to all students of the U of M and of the College’s Faculty of Theology.

Application Forms: Are linked below, they are also available from the Awards Clerk. Instructions are printed on the forms with a list of material to include with the applications.  If required the, single sided one page, letter of application should explain in detail how you meet each point of the award criteria. Note that there are no application forms for awards listed in the “Prizes” section; all St John’s College members registered in full-time study at the U of M will automatically be considered.

Application Deadlines: Your application must be received by the Awards Clerk by 4:30 pm on the deadline. DeadlinesApril 1st  July 31st  and September 30th.  If the deadline falls on a weekend or holiday, it will be extended until 4:30 pm the next business day.  Late or incomplete applications will normally be disqualified. Late reference letters will, however, usually be accepted as long as they are received shortly after the deadline, before applications are circulated to the members of the Scholarship Committee. You should contact the Awards Clerk before the deadline to request an extension for reference letters you know will be late.

Transcripts: U of M transcripts will be obtained by the Awards Clerk; you do not need to include them with your application. Entrance students must include final high school transcripts. Students who are coming to the U of M from another university must include their transcripts. If you are applying for several awards at the same time, you may submit a single set of external transcripts.

Selection of Recipients: Unless otherwise noted on the application form, recipients will be selected by the St John’s College Scholarship Committee. The Committee may choose to split awards between multiple recipients, or not to make an award at all.

Notification of Recipients and Donors: The Awards Clerk will only write to the recipients and alternates.  Please make sure your contact information on Aurora Student is kept up-to-date. The names of award recipients and alternates will be announced to the Assembly of St John’s College. Recipients’ names will be printed in the College’s Convocation program, and may also be published in other promotional material of the College, such as the Annual Report. Recipients’ names, and if requested by the donor, the information about how they met the award criteria will be sent to award donors or their families.  Recipients will be encouraged to send a thank-you note to donors c/o the Awards Clerk.

Payment and Award Certificates: See application forms for payment information on particular awards. Award Certificates will be presented to recipients at the College’s Convocation on the first Sunday in November. The recipients will receive an invitation to Convocation in the fall. If the recipient is unable to attend Convocation, the certificate may be picked up from the College at a later date.

Entrance Students For students who will begin their first-year of university in the fall, and who will enroll as full-time students and St John’s College members at the U of M. Note: Once you have enrolled as a first-year student, you may also be eligible for awards with a deadline of September 30.

Arthur Uniacke Chipman Entrance Scholarship: Up to $1525 To be awarded to the student entering first-year university as a full-time student and member of St John’s College, who best combines academic achievement and leadership ability. A minimum average of 80% in the final year of high school is required. Where applicants are of roughly equal standing on these criteria, preference will be given first to students who are registered with mature-student status and second to those with significant financial need.

Henry Irvine Graham Entrance Scholarship: Up to $5475 (Funds for this award are shared with the H. Irvine Graham Undergraduate Scholarship) The major criterion will be a demonstration of how the applicant is “well-rounded” and has overcome difficulties in order to realize their full potential. Must be a citizen or permanent resident of Canada, be entering the first year of studies at the U of M with a minimum of 18 credit hours, register as a member of St John’s College, and have demonstrated exceptional academic promise, diversity of interests, potential for leadership, and community service. This scholarship may not be held concurrently with other scholarships totaling more than $500.

Laurence Frank Wilmot Entrance Scholarship: Up to $5475 To be awarded to a student entering his/her first year at the U of M and who is a member of St John’s College. The recipient shall be registered in a full-time undergraduate program. Awarded for proven leadership abilities and demonstrated interest in (a) his/her community and/or the welfare of fellow students, (b) athletics, and/or (c) other activities. Scholastic ability and academic potential shall be considered however, the award will not necessarily go to the candidate with the highest grades.

First Year Students These awards are for St John’s College members who are completing their first year of university. First year students may also be eligible for awards listed under “General”, “Residence Students” and “Prizes”.

Helen & Bill Battershill Scholarship: Up to $1500 For a full-time undergraduate student at the U of M who is currently a member of St John’s College. Must be entering second year of full-time studies (and registering in a minimum 24 credit hours) at the U of M in September. Minimum sessional GPA of 3.00. Must have demonstrated active participation in the College (e.g. student government, athletics, intramurals, committee work, Chapel, other College activities, etc) and must be registered as a College member in the fall. Preference will be given to applicants who have completed a minimum of nine credit hours (with a minimum grade of B in each course) in any two of the following departments: English, History, and Philosophy (none of these departments is to be given preference over another). Funds for this award will be shared with the George W. Battershill Scholarship at the Scholarship Committees discretion and the Committee may choose to select multiple recipients, or not to award either or both awards.

Burman/Drewry Scholarship: Up to $650 To be presented to a St John’s College member completing the first year of university studies, for excellence in academics, leadership abilities, and participation in university life, particularly in athletics. Must re-register as a College member in September.

Dance Bursary: Up to $650 To be awarded to a St John’s College member who is completing the first year of university studies and who demonstrates financial need. Must re-register as a College member the following academic year.

General These scholarships and bursaries are for St John’s College students in any year of study. Awards marked (u) are open only to undergraduate students.

† Marion Abra Memorial Bursary: Up to $975 Awarded to recognize both scholarly accomplishment and financial need. To qualify, students must have: completed at least one year as a full-time student registered at St John’s College (by the end of April), achieved an overall average of B or better, and demonstrated significant financial need. For applicants meeting these criteria, each of the following factors will be considered an advantage, but not a requirement: mature student status, single parent status, major in a humanities subject. Must re-register as a College member in September.

Beverley and Bishop Allan Bursary: Amount TBA  For a St John’s College member who has completed at least one year at the U of M as a full-time student, ending with no less than a cumulative 2.8 GPA.  Is registered as a full-time student with a minimum 18 credit hours. Must demonstrate financial need. Priority will be given to a student who currently resides in Manitoba and has done so for the past 5 years. Each recipient will recieve the award for 2 years. The above criteria must be fulfilled in the second year.

James F. Blewett Memorial Bursary: Up to $700 For a St John’s College member and full-time student in any year of studies. Must demonstrate financial need. Must have demonstrated ongoing humanitarian qualities (for example, through volunteer work or community service), and a commitment to academics and their school communities. Preference will be given to students who are enrolled in Education or who are majoring in Human Resources Management in the Asper School of Business.

† K. C. Bolton Debating Award: Up to $150 For a St John’s College member who has demonstrated exceptional involvement in debating.

The George Thomas Chapman Memorial Bursary: amount TBA; must be a member of St John’s College; have a demonstrated significant financial need; open to U of M undergraduate and graduate students; open to full and part-time students; continue as a member of the College in the fall

Alice Cheatley Bursary: Up to $975 For a St John’s College member registered in a full-time program who has done work in one or more of these areas: the United Nations, Political Studies as related to International Relations, or Canadian Studies. Minimum sessional GPA of 3.00 required. Must demonstrate significant financial need. Must re-register as a College member and full-time student in the fall.

† Children-of-Clergy Bursaries: several awards, total available up to $5375 Awarded to St John’s College members with a parent who is a clergy member of the Anglican Church of Canada. Students entering their first or subsequent year of studies at the U of M or in the St John’s College Faculty of Theology in the fall are eligible for these bursaries. The bursaries will be awarded at the discretion of the Bishop of Rupert’s Land.

† James Frost Cross Memorial Trophy: trophy plus prize of up to $325 Presented to the student of St John’s College deemed to be the most proficient in the combined fields of academics and athletics, and to have made a significant contribution to the welfare of the College and his/her fellow students. A candidate needs to be nominated by another student, and the recipient will be selected by the St John’s College Students’ Association, subject to approval by the Scholarship Committee and the Warden.

† Ivan J. R. Deacon and Phyllis E. Deacon Bursary: Up to $875 St John’s College members enrolled at the U of M or in the College’s Faculty of Theology may apply. The recipient shall be registered in a full-time undergraduate or graduate program. First-year students are eligible to apply. Awarded to assist with the costs of education and/or accommodation for those with demonstrated financial need. Preference will be given to a student who is of Canadian aboriginal ancestry, self-declared (Inuit, Métis, Non-Status Indian, or Treaty/Status Indian). Community involvement and leadership potential may be considered.

† Charles Edward Drewry Bequest Limited emergency funding may be available for St John’s College members in the form of a loan or bursary. Students should meet with the Awards Clerk to submit a written request. The awarding of funds from the bequest is at the discretion of the Warden. No deadline submit request at any time. † Donnie Eastwood Memorial Bursary: Up to $1925 St John’s College members registered in full-time studies (minimum 18 credit hours) at either the U of M or the College’s Faculty of Theology may apply. A cumulative average of at least a B (3.00 GPA) is required, or, for first-year students, a high school average of no less than 80% in the final year of high school. Demonstrated financial need, and demonstrated capacity and desire to help others shall be considered. Any student registered in the Faculty of Theology at St John’s College who meets the above criteria is encouraged to apply.

Michael and Muriel Ewanchuk Bursary: Up to $2550 For a St John’s College member registered in a full-time undergraduate or graduate program. Must demonstrate financial need. Must include one or more letters from professors describing how the applicant’s studies have focused on the history of Ukrainians in Canada, particularly in Manitoba. Must re-register as a College member in a full-time program in September.

† William E. Harrison Bursary: Up to $2400 This bursary is intended for a full-time student in the Faculty of Theology at St John’s College. However, if no suitable Theology student applies, applications from U of M students registered as St John’s College members will be considered. Applicants must have good academic standing. Theology students must provide a letter from the Dean of Theology attesting to this.  U of M students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00, and students entering their first year at U of M must have a minimum average of 80% in the final year of high school. Applicants must provide two letters in support of their community involvement, and must demonstrate financial need. A capacity and desire to help others shall be considered.

Hoskins Scholarship: Up to $975 To be awarded to a full-time U of M student, who has completed at least first year at the U of M, entering second year Science or later at the U of M, who is a member of St John’s College. The recipient will have completed courses with high standing in the following: (1) Calculus and (2) a course designated with a “w” signifying writing content. Must re-register as a full-time student and College member in September.

(u) Morgan Scholarship: Up to $1225 Must have a permanent residence in rural Manitoba (that is, a residence outside Winnipeg and the R.M.s of Cartier, East St Paul, Headingly, Macdonald, Ritchot, Rockwood, Rosser, Springfield, St Andrews, St Clements, St François-Xavier, Taché, West St Paul). Must be a full-time undergraduate student with a cumulative average of at least a B (3.00 GPA) or, for first-year students, an average of no less than 80% in the final year of high school. Must register in full-time studies (as defined by the applicant’s faculty), and as a St John’s College member at the U of M in September of the current year. Must provide three letters of support indicating a demonstrated record of outstanding contributions and commitment to the community.

 † Partners in Education Award: Up to $500 The applicant must be enrolled as a St John’s College member in full-time studies, either at the University of Manitoba or in the St John’s College Faculty of Theology. The applicant must have an average grade of at least a B (cumulative GPA of 3.00) at the end of regular session. Involvement in the life of St John’s College and volunteer activities in a community will be considered. Financial need may be considered. Preference will normally be given to a member of a parish of the Anglican Church of Canada. Must re-register in full-time studies and as a College member in September.

St John’s College Students’ Association Awards: Up to $2000 For St John’s College members who are registered in full-time studies at the U of M with a minimum term GPA of 2.00. Successful candidates will have demonstrated involvement in College life during the current academic year. Involvement in a community of faith may also be considered. Applicants must provide a brief essay on the topic “What St John’s College Means to Me”. Financial need may be considered. Preference may be given to students who have not previously received the award. Funds provided and recipients selected by the St John’s College Students’ Association.

(u) † St Luke’s Award: Up to $625 Applicants may be entering or continuing full-time studies either in an undergraduate program of the U of M, or in the College’s Faculty of Theology. Must be registered as a St John’s College member. Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.50 required for returning students. Preference will be given to a “recognized participant” in St Luke’s Anglican Church in Winnipeg, with demonstrated involvement in community and public service. The award will be given in recognition of financial need, assuming the criteria are met. Applications will be reviewed by a selection committee of the Parish of St Luke, which will send a nomination for approval by the Scholarship Committee.

Alfred H. Shephard Bursary: Up to $6075 For a St John’s College member who will have completed one year of full-time studies (minimum of 18 credit hours) at the U of M by May of the current year. Must demonstrate clear financial need. Must be continuing in full-time studies (minimum of 18 credit hours) at the U of M as a St John’s College member in September.

Senior Students (year 2+) For students completing their second or later year of study. Open to undergraduate and graduate students. Senior students may be eligible for awards listed under “General”, “Graduate Students”, “Dentistry, Law, and Medicine”, “Residence Students”, “Student Exchanges”, and “Prizes”.

 All Saints James Brown Bursary: Up to $450 For a St John’s College member who has demonstrated financial need. Must have successfully completed a minimum of 60 credit hours by May of the current year. Must register for a full-time program (minimum 18 credit hours) with an emphasis on Canadian Studies at the U of M, as a St John’s College member, in September of the current year. Applicants must provide letters from one or more professors indicating that their studies contain a significant component pertaining to Prairie Studies. If a candidate fulfilling the above criteria is not found then the Bursary can be awarded to a student with a minimum of 60 credit hours in any field of study.

George W. Battershill Scholarship: Up to $1500 To be awarded to a St John’s College member who will be registered in full-time studies in the Faculty of Education at the U of M in the fall. A minimum Degree GPA of 3.00 is required. The recipient will have participated actively in College life. Preference will be given to students who hold a degree from the U of M and who were College members at the time of graduation. The recipient must register as a St John’s College member in the fall. Funds for this award will be shared with the Helen & Bill Battershill Scholarship. The Scholarship Committee may choose to select multiple recipients, or may choose not to award either or both awards.

Canadian Shield Scholarship: Up to $1500 Awarded to a member of St John’s College who is a research fellow, graduate student, or senior undergraduate student (going into third or fourth year with a minimum course load of 18 credit hours) at the U of M. Must provide academic reference letters indicating that the study of subjects pertaining to the Canadian Shield constitutes a significant part of the applicant’s studies. Must have a minimum grade of B in each course relevant to the Canadian Shield completed in the current academic year or latest year of study. Recipients who are graduate or undergraduate students must re-register in full-time studies and as College members in September.

Wendy Hansen Memorial Scholarship: Up to $1775 For a full-time student registered in a program of studies at the U of M as a St John’s College member. Must have completed (or must be completing) the second or later year of a program of studies. Must have demonstrated exceptional academic involvement in College and university life, while maintaining an average grade of at least a B. (Involvement in College and university life may include participation in some or all of the following: student government, athletics, intramurals, College activities, committee work, etc.). Must re-register as a College member in September. Candidates must be nominated by two other students.

† Canon Grant Hyslop Bursary: Up to $500  The applicant must be entering or continuing part-time or full-time studies in the Faculty of Education at the U of M and be a member of St John’s College. Must demonstrate financial need, have a minimum Degree GPA of 2.50, have demonstrated active participation in the College, and must register as a College member in the fall. Preference will be given to students who hold a degree from the U of M and who were St John’s College members at the time of graduation, and to students who are active within an Anglican parish, as demonstrated by a letter from their priest or a member of their congregation, describing their involvement.

NOTE: In the event no recipient is selected, the Scholarship Committee may decide to re-advertise the award in the fall with a deadline of September 30 under the following criteria: The applicant must be enrolled in part-time or full-time studies in EITHER the Faculty of Education at the U of M, or in the Faculty of Theology at St John’s College, by the application deadline. Must demonstrate financial need. Preference will be given to students who are active within an Anglican parish, as demonstrated by a letter from their priest or a member of their congregation, describing their involvement. Deadline September 30, only if the bursary was not awarded in April.

 

C.A.E. Jensen Scholarship: Amount TBA  To be awarded to a full-time St John’s College member.  Must be a full-time student at the University of Manitoba entering 3rd year or later.  Has demonstrated academic excellence; with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.50.  Substantial non-scholastic interest such as athletics, music, student government, etc.

The Lajos Lukács Scholarship in Pure Mathematics: amount TBA; must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 4.0; must be a student in pure mathematics; preference will be given to individuals enrolled in the following Mathematics programs in the order of priority: 1) Masters; 2) PhD; 3) Honours program; for Graduate students area of research must be topological algebra, general topology, or categorical topology; Honours students must have completed Math 3240 Topology 1 with a minimum grade of A; must register as a member of St John’s College in the Fall

Erin Palamar Bursary in Nursing: Up to $500  The bursary will be presented on the following terms: the candidate is a full-time student registered in the Faculty of Nursing in second year or later at the University of Manitoba as a St  John’s College member; the candidate has a minimum sessional  GPA of 3.0; the candidate demonstrates financial need; the candidate demonstrates involvement in College and or university life (may include participation in some or all of the following: student government, College activities, committee work, etc.)

Gordon O. Rothney Scholarship in Modern World History: Up to $600 For a History student (honours, major, minor, or graduate program) who is completing at least the second year of undergraduate studies and is registered as a St John’s College member. Must have received a grade of B or better in six or more credit hours of History in the current year. Must register in a program of History Studies, including at least six credit hours in Modern World History and as a College member in September.

Symons Scholarship in Canadian Studies: Up to $325 Must have completed at least 60 credit hours with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 (B) by May of the current year. Must register in a full-time program (minimum 18 credit hours) with an emphasis on the study of Canada at the U of M in September of the current year, and as a member of St John’s College. Must have a demonstrated record of outstanding contributions and commitment to the community. Preference will be given to students enrolled in the Canadian Studies Program (honours, major, minor).

The Kathryn & Robert Young Graduate Scholarship: Amount TBA  Awarded to an undergraduate in his/her final year of study in history or to a graduate student who intends to pursue a Masters or PhD degree in history at any Canadian university, open to full and part-time students, candidate must show proof of acceptance/enrollment in a Canadian graduate program and must have a minimum GPA of 3.5. Preference will be shown for students who have participated in the life of St John’s College.

Graduate Students Students entering or continuing in the Faculty of Graduate Studies may also be eligible for awards listed under “General”, “Senior Students”, “Dentistry, Law, and Medicine”, “Residence Students”, or “Prizes”.

Arthur Uniacke Chipman Graduate Scholarship: Up to $4000  For a full-time student beginning a Master’s or Ph.D. program in the Faculty of Graduate Studies at the U of M. The recipient will register as a College member in September. Minimum sessional GPA of 3.50 in each of the final two years of the previous program required. Preference will be given to those studying in the Humanities and Social Sciences. The award includes the use of a Graduate Carrel in the College for the academic year. Recipients will be selected by the   St John’s College Scholarship Committee, but notification of recipients and payment will be made by the University’s Faculty of Graduate Studies.

Colin Inkster Memorial Award: Up to $2625  Awarded on the basis of academic achievement to a member or graduate of St John’s College who shows promise of achieving distinction in graduate work. Preference will be given to applicants who appear likely to make a contribution in the fields of either Canadian Studies or Religion. Must be a Canadian citizen. Candidates may be doing graduate work at the U of M or at another university.

Dentistry, Law, and Medicine

John E. Abra Memorial Bursary: Up to $1125  For a student entering or continuing in a full-time program in Dentistry, Medicine, or Law in the fall. Must have been a full-time undergraduate student at the U of M and have been a member of St John’s College. Preference will be given to a Dentistry student, and preference will be given to a program at the U of M. Must demonstrate significant financial need. Must have achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.00.

R. Kelly McGinnis Memorial Scholarship: Up to $500  For a St John’s College graduate entering first-year Medicine at the U of M. Must have demonstrated active involvement in the College.

Residence Students  For students living in St John’s College Residence (except the Kathleen Burrows Lightcap Bursaries, which are open to St John’s College members living in any residence on campus).

Revd. Canon and Mrs. Thomas D. Conlin Bursary: Up to $12,000 For a student who is entering the first or subsequent year in St John’s College Residence in September of the current year. Must register as a St John’s College member in a full-time program of study at the U of M in September. Must have a demonstrated financial need and a demonstrated record of outstanding contributions and commitment to his or her community. Must have a minimum sessional GPA of 3.00, or 80% in the final year of high school for first-year students.

Must be entering the second or later year as a resident student of St John’s College. A cumulative average of at least 3.00 is required. Financial need will be considered. Murdith McLean Scholarship: Up to $1025 For the St John’s College resident student who best combines contributions to residence life with academic achievement. Must be entering the second or later year as a resident of St John’s College this fall. Must be registered as a College member and as a full-time student (minimum 18 credit hours) at the U of M. Minimum cumulative of GPA is 3.00 required. Residents may apply or be nominated for this Scholarship.

St John’s College Student Travel Fellowship – not available in 2011/2012 For a research fellow, graduate student, or senior undergraduate student who is a member of St John’s College and who will make a presentation to a scholarly conference or its recognized equivalent, such as a musical workshop or colloquium of the arts.

† Mary and Patrick Lee Bursary: Up to $850  For a St John’s College member or graduate who will travel to Uganda to share their expertise in fields such as Education, Theology, Medicine, Architecture or Engineering, to offer help in developing the skills of Ugandans, and to encourage them in their work.  Note: If no recipient is selected from the applications with an April 1st deadline, or if the recipient declines the award, the bursary will be re-advertised in the same year with a deadline of July 31.

Anthony Waterman Fellowship: Up to $ 775  Awarded to a research fellow, graduate student, or senior undergraduate student registered as a St John’s College member who is or was in an Economics program (honours or major), or in an Honours Management program, and who will present (or who recently presented) an Economics paper at a conference. Minimum GPA of 3.00 required.

Student Exchanges

 SJC Exchange Student Scholarship in Canadian Studies – not available in 2011/ 2012 For a student from another university who will enroll at the U of M under a Student Exchange Agreement. Based on academic standing and completion of a minimum of one year of study at the home institution prior to enrolment in the exchange program. The student must enroll in some Canadian Studies courses at the U of M, and as a member of St John’s College. The award consists of room and board in the College’s Residence for one or both academic terms.

St John’s College Student Exchange Scholarship – not available in 2011/2012  Awarded in support of travel and accommodation costs of a St John’s College member who has been accepted for a year’s study in a university in the U.S.A. or abroad that has an exchange agreement with the U of M. Must have completed at least the second year of an Honours or a 4-year program.

Automatic Awards Awarded to St John’s College members registered as full-time students at the U of M based on grades achieved during regular session (September-April). A minimum grade of B is required. Credit hours in the subject area, sessional credit hours, and sessional grade point average may be taken into account. The Awards Clerk will notify you if you are a recipient.  All St John’s College members will be considered for these awards and prizes. No application is necessary.

St John’s College Alumni Association Scholarship: Up to $575  Awarded for the highest marks upon completion of University 1 as a St John’s College member and a full-time student. Must re-register as a College member in September.

Jane Bancroft Memorial Book Prize in French: Up to $300  For the St John’s College member entering third or fourth year who achieved the highest mark in a 2000- or 3000-level French course (with preference given to French Literature). Must re-register as a full-time student and College member in the fall. Awarded to reimburse the recipient for book purchases.

† Jean and Fred Bancroft Prize: Up to $425  Awarded for highest cumulative GPA (minimum 3.0) to a student who is registered as a College member and full-time undergraduate student at the U of M, and who is majoring in Religion (in a General, Advanced, or Honours program). Must be continuing in a program of Religion at the undergraduate or graduate level at the U of M as a College member in the fall. If no student meets these criteria, the Scholarship Committee will consider full-time students of the College’s Faculty of Theology who have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0, and who are continuing on in the Faculty.

G. L. Broderson Memorial Award: Up to $825  For the highest grade in a Canadian Literature course.

Herbert E. N. Chisholm Prize: Up to $250  For excellence in the study of the Classics in Greek and Latin.

Lovell Clark Award: Up to $275  For academic excellence in the second or third year of an undergraduate History program (General, Advanced, or Honours). Must be continuing a program of study in History as a College member.

Friends of St John’s College Scholarships: six awards of up to $400 each  Three first-year awards based on highest sessional GPA: two to University 1 students and one to a student in any other faculty or school. Three second-year awards based on highest sessional GPA: one to a student in Arts, one to a student in Science, and one to a student in any other faculty or school.

Sibyl Inkster Centennial Medal: medal plus up to $125  For academic excellence in the graduating year of the General Arts program (based on the final 30 credit hours completed). St John’s College members who graduated or are scheduled to graduate with a General B.A. this year will be considered in the fall. Members who declare an October graduation date after the Awards Clerk has prepared a list of candidates will not be considered.

Sibyl Inkster Scholarship in English: Up to $775  For highest standing in a minimum of six credit hours of 1000-level English.

C. E. Kent Memorial Prize: Up to $775  For the highest grade in six credit hours of a first-year Mathematics course.

C. C. Landon Memorial Entrance Scholarship: Up to $675  Awarded to the student with the highest grades upon entering first-year university. All first-year students who have joined St John’s College by the first day of classes in September will automatically be considered.

Malcom Scholarship in Modern Languages: two awards of up to $200 each  One award for high standing in French and one award for high standing in German. Must re-register as St John’s College members the following academic year.

The Dr. William Norton Award: amount TBA   The award will be made to the student with the highest Degree GPA having completed a minimum of 18 credit hours in geography, it is open to undergraduate or graduate students in a Geography programme, preference will be given to individuals enrolled in BA Geography, preference will be given to a student in Human Geography

William Pickering Prize in Sociology: Up to $225  Awarded to a full-time undergraduate Sociology student (Major, Minor, or Honours program) who has completed second or third year. For highest standing in a second- or third-year Sociology course.  Must re-register in Sociology and as a College member in the fall.

Ted and Edna Poulter Scholarships: two awards of up to $750  Two equal scholarships of $750 will be awarded annually; one at Glenlawn Collegiate and one at Dakota Collegiate.  The scholarships are to be awarded based on the following criteria: The student must be eligible to graduate in the current school year, with a minimum graduating average of 78%.  Upon graduation, the student must apply for and be accepted in a program of studies  at the University of Manitoba.  Awarded for demonstrated leadership in student affairs, sports, music, or other school-related activities.  The recipient must become a member of St John’s College; and be registered  in a program of studies at the University of Manitoba by September. 

Royal Astronomical Society Award: Up to $200  For highest marks in an Astronomy course. May not be available every year.

Sir John Schultz Scholarship: Up to $1275  For excellence in Canadian History.

Kevin D. Toyne Prize in Legal Philosophy: Up to $250  For the highest mark in PHIL 3430: Problems in Legal Philosophy. If no eligible candidate is registered in PHIL 3430, then the committee will consider St John’s College members in PHIL 2860: Philosophy of Law and PHIL 2870: Philosophy and Law, or equivalents. Minimum grade of “B” in the course is required. Preference will be given to undergraduate students.

Margaret Waterman Memorial Scholarship: Up to $600  Awarded based on highest Degree GPA. The candidate must be registered as a St John’s College member, be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student at the U of M in the Faculty of Arts, have declared a major in a Humanities subject (as defined by the U of M calendar), and have successfully completed at least six credit hours in Humanities between May 1 of last year and April 30 of this year. The recipient should have a minimum Degree GPA of not less than 3.50; and be continuing studies at the undergraduate or graduate level at the U of M and as a member of St John’s College in the fall.

 

Theology Students  For students of the Faculty of Theology at St John’s College only. Recipients will be selected by the St John’s College Faculty of Theology Council, subject to the approval of the College’s Scholarship Committee. The selection committee may choose to split awards between more than one applicant, or not to make an award at all. The combined value of awards made by the College to the recipient shall not exceed the cost of the recipient’s tuition fees.

† Bishop John O. Anderson Memorial Bursary: Up to $900 To be awarded to a student who is entering or continuing studies in the Diploma in Applied Theology Program, or in one of the Advanced Certificate Programs of the Faculty of Theology at St John’s College in September. Must demonstrate financial need. A commitment to and capacity for ministry shall be considered.

† Cassap Prize: Up to $50  For the student registered in the Diploma in Applied Theology Program who receives the highest grade in SJH100: Anglican History.  Automatic Award no application necessary.

 

† Archbishop Walter and Marilyn Jones Bursary: Up to $2450  To be awarded to a student who is entering or continuing studies in the Faculty of Theology at St John’s College in September. Preference will be given to students entering the Advanced Certificate in Applied Theology Program who meet the criteria given above. If none applies, the selection committee will consider applications from students entering or continuing studies in the Diploma in Applied Theology or Advanced Certificate Programs. Must demonstrate financial need. Commitment to and capacity for ministry shall be considered. Two letters of recommendation are required (including one from a Bishop) describing how the candidate meets this criterion. Academic performance will not be the major criterion but will be considered.

† Jessie Ostberg Legacy: Up to $800  To be awarded to a student who is entering or continuing studies in the Diploma in Applied Theology Program, or in one of the Advanced Certificate Programs of the Faculty of Theology at St John’s College in September. Must demonstrate financial need. A commitment to and capacity for ministry shall be considered.

† Canon Maurice Poole Entrance Bursary: Up to $800  To be awarded based on financial need to a student who is entering the Diploma in Applied Theology at St John's College in the fall. The recipient must be registered as a St John's College member.

† Mary Vincent Prewer Scholarship: Up to $1300  Awarded to the returning student with the highest sessional grade point average in the Diploma in Applied Theology Program or in one of the Advanced Certificate programs of the Faculty of Theology at St John’s College.  Automatic Award no application necessary.

 

The Jack and Eva Rogers Memorial Trust Fund: Amount TBA Awarded to students entering into or continuing in a Faculty of Theology programme either part-time or full-time who has demonstrated a significant financial need and a demonstrated capacity for ministry (lay or ordained)

† St. Andrew's ACW Memorial Bursary: Up to $250  To be awarded based on financial need to a student who is entering the Diploma in Applied Theology Program at St John's College in the fall. The recipient must be registered as a St John's College member.

† Laurence Frank Wilmot Bursaries: Amount TBA  Three (3) equal awards:  Two (2) awards are available for students entering the first year of the Diploma in Applied Theology program.  One (1) award  for a student continuing in either the Diploma in Applied Theology or Advanced Certificate program in the Faculty of Theology.  Must demonstrate financial need.  Must demonstrate a commitment to and capacity for ministry.
